Opel Astra OPC Extreme - The Fastest Astra In History Officially Presented
|   Wednesday, March 05, 2014
The Opel Astra OPC Extreme, a car which will have its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show, is a true performance car, developed on the race track. Developed at the Nürburgring Nordschleife track, the most difficult race circuit in the world, it is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter unit with an output of 300 hp and is equipped with all the key components of high performance racing found on its counterpart, the Opel Astra OPC Cup.

The Astra OPC Extreme was developed directly on the Cup version and introduces into regular driving pure racing technology.
If public reaction is as positive as it is estimated, Opel is planning a small series production of the super sport Extreme model approved for circulation on public roads.

Under the carbon fiber hood, the new Extreme model will develop a power of 300 hp. Its turbo engine displacing 2.0 liters uses gasoline and thanks to direct injection tech and variable camshaft timing, it is undoubtedly the most powerful four-cylinder unit ever produced by Opel.

The all-aluminum engine is combined with an ingenious manual transmission with six gears, which transmits power via a limited slip differential.

This propulsion system with proven performance on the race circuit will not face any problem on the OPC Extreme because the super sports car is 100 kilograms lighter than a conventional Astra OPC vehicle due to its carbon fiber components of high quality. This follows closely the practice used in Formula 1 racing, where carbon fiber parts are widespread.

This material is lightweight, has high strength and is used for the rear wings, which are optimized from an aerodynamic point of view. The front bumper, hood, diagonal support suspension, engine cover, all four wheels, ventilation from the rear wheel arches, and roof, also see carbon fiber used in their making.

Carbon fiber rims are 20 kilograms lighter than the aluminum versions. This is a weight reduction in an important area because it substantially reduces unsprung weight - to the delight of engineers and drivers. The carbon fiber roof is almost as light as a feather. It weighs only 2.6 kg, compared to a 9.3 kg steel roof and significantly lowers the center of gravity of the vehicle. The wings are made of aluminum and have a weight of only 800 grams / piece, versus 2.2 kilograms weigh if they were made of steel.

Opel offers this model with amazing braking power thanks to Brembo brake system with six pistons - including 370 mm front discs. 19-inch wheels with high performance 245 / 35 tires developed specifically for the Extreme also play a key role and provide almost the same level of grip as those on racing models. In addition, the chassis (spring / damper) is adjustable, just as in a real race car.

"With the new Astra OPC Extreme we show the pure joy of driving! This study is quite simply spectacular and driving enthusiasts will appreciate its looks, which are head-turning without grandstanding. Its interior is superb and typically Opel – exciting, precise and quality-made in Germany. The Extreme is the new top-of-the-line model in our Astra family with all the attributes of a super sporty car," said Opel CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann.
