Opel Astra 1.6 CDTI Gets Changes To Cut Down Fuel Consumption
|   Monday, February 23, 2015
The Opel engine is on a continuous improvement spree: launched in spring 2014, the Opel Astra engine equipped with the new generation 1.6-liter turbo diesel has already achieved the A + energy label in Germany and now becomes greener and more fuel efficient.

The Astra with a redesigned 1.6 CDTI engine rated at 81 kW / 110 hp now has CO2 emissions of just 94 grams per kilometer (compared to 97 grams before), equivalent to a consumption of 3.6 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (0.
liters less than before). Regarding the enhanced power version of 100 kW / 136 hp the engine now emits just 99 grams of CO2 per kilometer (5 grams less than before) and needs just 3.7 liters of diesel (0.2 liters less) so that even the strongest silent diesel Astra doesn't break the barrier of 100 grams per kilometer.

Just a few months after the launch of the new 1.6 CDTI engine equipping the Astra, Opel engineers have continued to improve, so that now it provides emissions and consumption values five percent lower, with the same level of performance and comfort . New components with a low level of friction for both chassis and bodywork have been used to optimize the transmission shafts, or fitting low rolling resistance tires, to name two examples.

In addition, the aerodynamics package, which includes a lower chassis and active radiator obturators, helps to reduce the aerodynamic coefficient – the active obturators open and close automatically, depending on the temperature as well as engine speed. In addition, the engine specialists have worked diligently to further improve the combustion process.

The result of all these measures is that the Astra equipped with the new generation of silent diesel now emits three grams less CO2 per kilometer, while the version of 110 kW / 136 hp can provide an impressive reduction of five grams and running performance was maintained for both power versions. The stronger version propels the Astra from 0 to 100 km / h in 10.1 seconds and reaches a top speed of 205 km / h.

The 1.6 CDTI engine is manufactured at the Opel plant in Szentgotthard, Hungary. The unit is constructed of aluminum and complies with Euro 6 standard. Right off the bat, Opel focused to provide the finest possible engine in the segment, with the lowest values of vibration and noise possible on a diesel in this class being targeted.

The diesel unit is part of a new family called MDE which debuted on the Zafira Tourer. The engine is available in several versions: the first version offering 136 hp and 320 Nm of torque. Compared to the previous 2.0-liter unit, the engine is 10 percent more fuel efficient.

According to Michael Ableson, GM Europe Engineering Vice President: "The new 1.6 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo gasoline and 1.6 CDTI engines comprise the core of our engine offensive. They prove that Opel cars not only impress with design, but also offer top quality with ultra-modern technologies for an all-round, first-class driving experience."
