Opel Adam Priced Under Fiat 500
|   Saturday, September 29, 2012
The new Opel Adam mini car has had its price announced and the good news is it's below that of competition from Fiat 500.

When it goes in showrooms in January, in Germany of course, the entry level 1.2 liter gasoline fueled version will cost 11,500 euro (14,870 dollars). The cheapest Fiat 500, which is also a 1.2 liter variant with a gasoline engine, starts at 11,600 euro. The highest version of the Adam will go for 14,700 euro while its rival stands at 15,600 euro.

Liz Wetzel, the Opel interior design director:"We think of the Fiat as a little bit more of a feminine design, a little bit cuter -- a cute design, whereas Adam is definitely more bold, more masculine."

Sale forecasts of Opel/Vauxhall show that about 40,000 to 50,000 Adams a year will be sold in Europe, with the Vauxhall's UK home, accounting for about 10,000 units. Meanwhile, last year in Europe Fiat sold 156,046 Fiat 500.

Compared to Opel's total annual unit sales of roughly 1 million, the Adam projected sales target is quite small.
GM Vice Chairman Steve Girksy stated earlier this year that this new car, the Adam, "could do more for Opel's image than any other product they've launched in a long time. It's not the giant moneymaker, but it could be a high-volume car with good image."

At Opel's factory in Eisenach, Germany, the Adam will be built on the Corsa line. The company has the necessary capacity to make the Adam and if demand in strong enough, production could easily be increased. Also, the car would actually be a money-maker even if it is made in Western Europe.
Fiat builds the 500 in Poland and Renault produces its Twingo mini car in Slovenia. That means that a mini car made in the West at a lower cost than those in the East has the potential to attract a lot of customers.

The Adam's 1.2 and 1.4 liter gasoline engines are taken from the Corsa. Opel has confirmed those engines will be soon replaced by the new breed of small turbocharged engines developed alongside GM's partner from China, Shanghai Automotive; displacements are likely to be in the range of 1.0 and 1.2 liters. The new engines are expected in 2014.

Opel is placing great emphasis on the numerous customization options it is providing customers with. Besides the 3 trim levels, Jam, Glam, and Slam, buyers can also choose 3 different roof colors as well as 20 wheel options. Interior trim options include a "starlight" headliner with some 60 embedded LEDs, plus an interior lighting package with 7 color settings.

The Adam also sees the new infotainment system that moves smartphone functions to the car's dash screen using Bluetooth or an USB link. Instead of the traditional nav system, Opel will sell a nav app that goes onto the driver's phone. iPhone and Android phones are both supported.

"We want to be known as a quality brand with affordable prices," stated Alfred Reick, Opel's head of sales and marketing.
