No SUV For BMW's i Range
|   Sunday, November 10, 2013
The range of electric vehicles from BMW will not include an SUV, say representatives of the Munich brand. The representative for the "i" project says the range will have models from i1 to i9.

Roland Kowalski, responsible for the BMW i3, says the range will include models numbered i1 to i9 and almost every niche is covered, except for SUVs. The explanation comes in the form of the i Project vehicles destination. These are concentrated in urban areas where smaller models are needed, and can be easily maneuvered in tight spaces.

Also, Roland Kowalski explained that "the thing with the SUVs is nobody, more than 90 percent, needs four-wheel drive for the city. The SUV trend is only a thing about the space or the roominess."

In addition, any city model should not have four-wheel drive, as we expect from an SUV, because this function is not required in the urban area, explains the BMW representative. As for the interior space, and drive train configuration of the BMW i, the Germans gave them the opportunity to provide greater interior volume for a model with a shorter wheelbase. For example, the new i3 has an internal volume comparable to the 3 Series sedan, while the wheelbase is comparable to the 1 Series hatchback.

The next project from BMW's i Division is called the i5, which can be either a crossover or a sedan which will provide a passenger compartment more spacious than the i3. Representatives of the German brand say they decided to launch the i3 and i8 supercar to provide more freedom for designers and engineers of the brand. They can propose new categories of models for the future of this division, different from those used by BMW in its standard range.

"If you start with i1, what do you do if you want to make a smaller car? A 0.5?" said BMW's vice-president of functional integration and driving dynamics, Jos van As. "I think they did it to leave space for something if we want to do something different. And that's something we're developing. With the separate i [brand] we take a very deliberate step in one direction if the world is moving towards less emissions, [problems with] petrol availability, etc."
Van As also said it was important for a sports car to appear in the range.

"To make a city car that's electric has been done by others, but we are also a brand that builds sporty cars," he said. "So it was a good idea to say we have to give our customers and people in general in the future what could be a sports car of the future."

"The i8 is the modern interpretation of a sports car and we are a company based around driving pleasure. We also have a lot of customers who like to drive on country roads and race tracks, and the i8 is a very good answer."

The German carmaker is hard at work on the newest members of its new i sub-brand that currently only has the BMW i3 (officially launched in Holland) plus the i8 hybrid supercar (coming next year).
