Nissan Working on Advanced Electric Fuel Cell Technology
|   Monday, June 10, 2013
Nissan is looking for 10 customers who will help test their new Low Carbon Emission Network cars. The new technology is currently being tested and if successful, Nissan could install it in new vehicles. The sample vehicles will be distributed across Europe and the results will be gauged. The project is known as My Electric Avenue and applicants will get a Nissan Leaf on lease each at £100 per month.

The term will last 18 months and the new owners will receive a charging point set up in their house for free.
Southern Electric Distribution and Scottish are pairing up with EA Technology that will try and minimize the effect of 10 vehicles being charged from the same port supplied by one substation. This new technology has been designed solely by EA Technology and is called the Esprit.

Esprit is capable of connecting the chargers to the local substation and will be responsible for charging the cars. The company plans on charging 10 cars simultaneously and the engineers want to see whether the supply system will be able to sustain the load or the system will give way. This is a very important test and the results will determine whether further development is needed or not.

Southern Electric Distribution Director of Distribution, Stuart Hogarth says that the primary solution to the charging issue would be to dig up every road and install electric cable capable of heavier intensity. However, this is beyond doubt an expensive and time consuming procedure and cannot be the sole solution. However, smart charging technologies are quite essential and will allow the cars to be recharged via the lowest point of demand.

This technology has been developed based on the needs of the Leaf owners and especially the ones who use their electric vehicles to travel long distances. If electric cars are the thing of the future, they need better battery backup with less recharging time. An electric car should be able to run continuously for 24 hours at a stretch on a single recharge. The partners have started working on an advanced technology based on Esprit which will allow them to communicate directly with the car and the substation.

However, there is still some time left for this technology to mature and in the meantime the current version of Esprit needs to work effortlessly. The future looks promising for the electric car industry as engineers are looking forward to designing technology which will tap into the driving pattern of the different users and as a result formulate expected fuel economy.

Satellite navigation has been installed in the vehicle and this is not the sole technologically advanced feature of the vehicle. Minor design changes are also likely although the final blueprints have not been made available. Without doubt this is an interesting project and the hype around this vehicle is at an all time high. People are in fact queuing up to participate. The latest developments will be posted as it happens although for the time being things are expected to be kept under wraps.
