Nissan To Develop Specific Sounds For Electric Cars
|   Monday, August 31, 2015
Nissan joined the eVADER project, which aims to develop a standardized sounds system for electric cars, in order to increase their safety in urban areas where they might not be heard by most pedestrians. The Japanese automaker already has a standard system for generating sounds for the Leaf, its first production model offered exclusively in electric version, and which is designed from scratch.

That is exactly why Nissan has been the perfect partner for the eVADER project, who wants to give pedestrians an extra chance on the roads, in parking lots and in areas in which they could be hit by an electric car because they did not hear it.

Together with ten other members, Nissan has created what they believe will be the next generation of alerts dedicated to pedestrians and other road users who are vulnerable, such as cyclists. The challenge in developing these sounds is the use of systems that propagate the sound at a reasonable distance and to make it easily identifiable as a car without imitating an internal combustion engine, without being harmful to the animals around, as well as without generating sound pollution. In other words, a simple imitation tone of an internal combustion engine was too little to mark progress of electric cars in recent years.
Nissan also presented a sample of the sound of the future, which will be generated by the electric vehicles of the future when pedestrians are near.

This sound is just one of the proposals and reminds us of Star Trek and the sound effects used by Enterprise shuttle and her sister ships. In addition to creating special sounds for electric cars of the future, Nissan has developed a prototype based on the Leaf which delivers that sound instead of the standard version, in order to experiment in the laboratory the way the new artificial sound, of the electrical vehicle is perceived.

"Pedestrian safety is of the utmost importance to Nissan, which is why we already have a pedestrian alert installed in our EVs as a preventative measure. As leaders in the EV market, we were keen to use our considerable experience to examine possible systems for future development in this field. Our objective has been to find an optimum balance between ensuring the cars are detectable, whilst retaining the reduction in noise pollution, which is one of the great benefits that our EVs offer" declared David Quinn, Nissan's e-VADER Project Leader.

In Europe, Nissan is has a complete present among any automakers based outside of the old continent. Those at Nissan have employed over 17,600 people across locally-based design, research and development, manufacturing, logistics as well as sales and marketing operations.

Nissan's plants in the UK, Spain and Russia produced more than 675,000 vehicles, including award-winning crossovers, SUVs, small cars, besides commercial and electric vehicles. Note that the Leaf is the most popular electric vehicle in the world right now with some 97 percent of customers willing to recommend the car to friends.
