Nissan Leaf Is First Production Car To Offer Phosphorescent Paint
|   Sunday, March 29, 2015
Those at Nissan once again are revolutionizing the field after having invented the paint which blurs surface scratches and after they inserted it into the list of options for the Infiniti. This time they enlisted the help of inventor Hamish Scott, creator of Starpath, a coat of paint capable of absorbing solar energy during the day, enough to shine between 8 to 10 hours at night.

Although there is already an auto foil that offers the same properties, Nissan is the first manufacturer in the world which introduces this paint on a series model: the current Leaf electric vehicle.

This paint has a secret formula composed entirely of organic materials, among them a rare element used. It's called strontium aluminate and is a yellow powder, heavier than water, able to provide long lasting phosphorescence. Basically, it is an evolved descendant of phosphorus.
Nissan will be able to apply this paint in the factory, providing a guarantee of 25 years for phosphorescence.

The Dutch from Studio Roosegarde have joined forces with those of Heijmans, a company specializing in infrastructure, to give birth to a very ambitious project. Called Smart Highway, the project was developed by Dutch designers and engineers to lead to sustainable and interactive highways, using light and energy. In other words, the Dutch will provide signs able to adapt to different road conditions.

Designers have thought up more features for future highways: Glow in the Dark Road, Dynamic Paint, Interactive Light, Induction Priority Lane and Wind Light.
In the beginning the idea seemed quite unusual, but some of them even have materialized. So that in Oss, the Netherlands, the first road in the world that shines in darkness was created. It is about 600 meters from the road, marked with reflecting paint. The solution allows natural lighting to the road, and saves the energy needed to improve visibility on this road segment.

In order to better show the usefulness of this invention and show to the entire world that driving at night can be as clear as daylight, people at Nissan have sent in the Netherlands, its first Leaf with phosphorescent paint, introduced in mid-February.

Nissan thought that they could take advantage of the combination of these two innovative technologies and promoted the new Leaf alongside the road with bright markings. Moreover, it was also a good opportunity, to announce that in 2014, in the Netherlands 1619 Nissan electric vehicles were sold in, which means a percentage increase of 313 percent.

"The Nissan LEAF is a shining beacon of sustainability and the future of motoring. Not only is it saving our customers money in running costs but it we are now seeing how it is helping people become more environmentally sensitive by reducing their carbon footprint" said Paul O'Neill, Nissan Motor GB Limited EV manager.

"Running the Nissan LEAF costs a sixth of the amount we'd pay to run a diesel or petrol car. Overall, we are probably using 25 percent less electricity thanks to our solar panels and it's a fantastic experience to be able to drive the LEAF using electricity that's been produced completely for free" Ian Finch, renewable energy consultant said.
