Nissan Introduces e-Power Hybrid System with Gasoline Generator
|   Wednesday, December 14, 2016
Nissan wants to facilitate the transition from conventional propulsion to pure electric propulsion with the new e-Power hybrid system. First installed on the Nissan Note e-Power, which has already gone into production, the propulsion has a conventional gasoline engine with 3 cylinders, a powerful electric motor and a battery pack placed under the seats of the driver and the front passenger. The battery pack is 20 times smaller than the one installed on the LEAF thus we can infer that it has a capacity of 1.
kWh, given that the LEAF offers a package of 30 kWh.

In contrast with a usual hybrid system that uses both the conventional engine and the electric motor to move the wheels, the new e-Power hybrid system uses only the electric motor to power the front wheels, while the conventional unit running on gasoline is not connected to the wheels and serves as a power generator for the lithium-ion battery pack.

It is a system similar to that used on the BMW i3 REX, but unlike the Bavarian batteries which can be charged from an electrical outlet and the power generator is included only when the batteries run out of power, the conventional engine on the e-Power system is used more frequently to help fill the batteries with energy.
Thus, the need to recharge from outlets is completely eliminated, the batteries being charged only with the conventional propeller.

The new e-Power propulsion is designed to deliver the driving experience of a pure electric vehicle, due to a strong compact electric motor, but without the hassle of changing batteries and reduced autonomy which affects electric vehicles.

Carlos Ghosn, president of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, said the e-Power technology could be used in Europe too.
Even if it is the manufacturer with the best-selling electric car in the world, Nissan is still looking for ways to attract more people into its range of vehicles with zero emissions. The solution found is actually a compromise that has been applied by others in the past.

In 2010, Nissan was loudly screaming that it launched a 100 percent electric Leaf, when across the ocean, in the United States, Chevrolet was also launching a 100 percent electric car, the Volt. Even if the American model used a gasoline engine to refill the batteries used by the electric motor, back then, the press and the public blamed Chevrolet Volt for deceptive marketing. Therefore, Nissan's Leaf could attract in silence many people willing to buy pure electric cars.

Now, almost six years since then, Nissan decided to do the same compromise that was done then by Chevrolet, followed by Opel with its Ampera and, more recently, BMW with the current i3. Nissan says that the engine will still be quiet, so the comfort standards level will remain high. After all we are speaking about Japanese and technology.

The model is available only in Japan right now, however Carlos Ghosn told Reuters that the e-Power would appear on the European eventually: "It's definitely cost-competitive with diesel," he said. Reuters indicated the Note's official consumption "suggests CO2 emissions of about 62 gram/km," situated well below the EU's 95 gram/km target for 2020.
