Nissan Has Installed 1,000 Quick Chargers For Electric Cars In Europe
|   Wednesday, February 05, 2014
Nissan has announced that it has installed 1,000 quick chargers in Europe. These are fast charging units that can refill the energy in electric cars batteries from 0 to 80 percent in just 30 minutes with zero cost.

Installing the fastest chargers of this kind exponentially increases the absorption and use of electric cars. In Norway, the largest market for electric cars in Europe, the number of vehicles using the E18 highway has increased by 8 times over a period of 18 months after installing CHAdeMO chargers on this route.

In Norway, the Nissan LEAF is the most popular electric vehicle. One of its strengths is the special Nordic Pack. This is only available for Nissan. The Nordic Pack includes a battery heater to counter the extreme low temperatures. Thus the front and rear seats are warmed, as well as the steering wheel, door mirrors and headlamp washers.

The Nordic pack has been specially engineered for Europe's coldest region as Senior Nissan LEAF Development Engineer, Tom McCabe explains: "Most of Europe experiences cold weather, but Norway and the rest of the Nordic region experiences persistently very low temperatures every winter. For this reason we engineered an automatic battery heater to ensure customers had the best experience of the car even at extreme low temperatures. This is fitted alongside the features normally found in the ‘cold pack' in other countries, but only the Nordic pack cars get the specially designed heater."

Although it is a small country, Norway has a comprehensive recharging network with more than 3,500 public charging posts and 100 fast chargers.
The new chargers have been installed in collaboration with Ecotricity, a company from England, specializing in green energy and charging electric cars.

"This is a huge landmark for zero-emission mobility, allowing a range of EVs, including the Nissan Leaf and forthcoming Nissan e-NV200 electric van, to quickly extend their journeys. The United Kingdom charging network is expanding rapidly and through our partner Ecotricity, customers are able to ‘refuel' their car for free with wind and solar generated electricity" said Jean Pierre Diernaz, director of Electric Vehicles for Nissan Europe.

The last charging stations are part of a 195 unit network in England, which form electrical corridors across the country, linking major cities and towns.

CHAdeMO chargers installation rate in Europe has increased rapidly in 2013. In 2010 there were only 16 charging points then the number jumped to 155 next year and 540 in 2012. By the end of 2014 it is estimated that a total of 1,800 charging points will be installed.

The investments to achieve this network of charging points were made by Nissan and a multitude of partners in the energy field, Including the Swiss multinational ABB Power Company, French DBT quick charger manufacturers, and the Portuguese Efacec Corporation.

There is however a problem with the CHAdeMO network expansion throughout Europe. This is because only two manufacturers use this type of supply network: Nissan and Mitsubishi. Right now,
only a minority of EVs makers work with CHAdeMO.
