Nissan Extrem Sports Concept To Head For The 2012 Sao Paulo Auto Show
|   Friday, October 26, 2012
This year, at the car festival held in Sao Paolo, Brazil, during the 24 October to 4 November, the Japanese from Nissan will launch a new vehicle. The new car combines the features of a sports car with those of a crossover. The new concept is dubbed the Extrem. Nissan Design America (NDA) in San Diego, California, created the petite 2+2 crossover in collaboration with Brazilian designers.

"When our designers arrived in Brazil to start work on the project, they loved the vibrancy and passion of the country but were a little surprised in the rather conservative colors of the cars on the streets… they all seemed to be monochrome – silver or black.
Finally, they've made sure our showcar might have a color as lively as the country," said Shiro Nakamura, Senior Vice President and Chief Creative Officer.

Robert Bauer, Senior Design Manager for the project at NDA: "We call it Baby Beast." He continued "We see it as an urban rally car, a tough little street fighter that can handle the urban jungle with agility and confidence."
Standing at 3,850 mm (151.6 inches) long, 1,765 mm (69.5 inches) wide and 1,530mm (60.2 inches) high, along with a wheelbase of 2.450 mm (96.5 inches), the Extrem is significantly smaller than the Juke (4,125 mm or 162.4 inches long) in all aspects.

Its design is a mixture of elements from a few Nissan models, ranging from the GT-R's front grille and fenders with air vents and going to the 370Z's headlamp and roofline.

Power for the 2+2 seater comes from Nissan's direct injection and turbocharged (DIG-T) 1.6 liter gasoline engine. Also, the automaker stated that the CUV could be offered alongside a choice of front or four-wheel drive with Torque Vectoring.

The company stressed out that the Extrem is "strictly a concept car with no immediate plans for production"; however, it was added that elements of this styling offer insight into future products, for Brazil and other parts of the world.

"EXTREM suggests that exotic and exciting design need not just be reserved for expensive cars. It shows that innovative, sophisticated design can be made in a clever, attainable way. EXTREM is one of our answers to this possibility and it opens an exciting new chapter in our design relationship with Brazil," stated Shiro Nakamura, Senior Vice President and Chief Creative Officer.

The exterior comes painted in a new color for Nissan called Solar Cortex, which is described as a deep metallic orange with radiant highlights. Among the new elements included we have the contrasting matte finish of the roof as well as the bright colors on the alloy wheels, 19 inches wide.

If built, which is far from being certain, Nissan says the Extrem would be set in motion by the company's turbocharged and direct-injected 1.6 liter 4 cylinder engine, a unit based on the powerplant in the Juke crossover as well as the one in the DeltaWing race car. The V-platform of the new Extrem is flexible enough to hold front-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations.
