Nissan BladeGlider - A Glimpse Into The Future Of Electric Sports Cars
|   Sunday, August 14, 2016
The concept Nissan BladeGlider returns in an updated form and demonstrates the skills which foreshadow a radical improvement of electric sports cars.
From the top of the list of the most sold electric models, Nissan allows itself room for all kinds of experiments, some extremely spectacular. BladeGlider is one of them.

The Nissan BladeGlider concept has captured the imagination first in 2013, when it debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show. The small wheel width in the front front and passenger configuration with three seats are features that make the Nissan BladeGlider an avant-garde interpretation of the classic sports car format.

With the occasion of the Olympic Games in Rio, Nissan has two functional prototypes of the concept BladeGlider. A copy is exhibited in the Olympic Park in Rio de Janeiro and the second is used to transport the press and VIPs during the great sporting event.

To build two functional BladeGlider prototypes Nissan turned to the Williams company's experience, respected both for its tradition in Formula 1, as well as its knowledge in developing electric propulsion, aerodynamics and chassis. Williams Advanced Engineering department of the Williams Group, which provides design and technology, built two BladeGlider prototypes for Nissan at its plant in Grove, Oxfordshire.

Nissan wants the BladeGlider concept to foresee the future of sports cars, with electric propulsion and very bold design elements. The two prototypes are basically cabriolets that have vaulted protection, instead of a ceiling. The huge doors with vertical opening offer a true visual spectacle.

Also, the steering wheel incorporates a multifunction screen on which information such as speed, battery life, data on the electricity supply regeneration and a graph of the torque curve are displayed. The rear view mirrors were replaced with video cameras in order to favor aerodynamics.
To complete the sports experience on board the BladeGlider, Nissan provided seats fitted with safety belts with four attachment points and has upholstery with materials that have sticky surface (textile material coated with epoxy resin).

In terms of performance, Nissan tells us that the BladeGlider has a lithium-ion battery of 220 kW (268 hp), with five modules and a cooling system specifically for this plus the two electric motors each with 130 kW mounted on the front wheels.
It also has a torque of 707 Nm and a weight of just 1300 kg.

The BladeGlider concept is capable of a top speed of over 190 km / h and goes from 0 to 100 km / h in less than 5 seconds.
In order to guarantee high maneuverability, the torque of the two electric motors is managed electronically. When the car understeers, the electronically system compensates automatically and distributes more torque to the outside wheel.

The driver can choose one of three modes of intervention system that control the torque. The modes are: disconnected, agile or drift.
Carlos Ghosn, president and CEO of the Japanese automaker said that "these prototypes epitomize Nissan's drive to expand its intelligent mobility strategy, where driving pleasure combines with environmental responsibility. Nissan believes that enthusiasts should look forward to a zero emission future and BladeGlider is a perfect demonstration of that. It's the electric vehicle for car-lovers."
