Next Generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class Will Use 400 HP Six-Cylinder Diesel Engine

Mercedes will launch the fifth generation of the E-Class next summer. The model will have a design inspired by its S-Class big brother and will be available in four body styles.

To maintain the public's attention that wants a premium sedan from the E segment, Mercedes is preparing to launch a new generation of the popular E-Class. The model is on the market since 2010 and has already gone through a facelift for its mid-career, which means that the audience already expects a complete renewal.

The model will be developed on the new platform MRA (abbreviation for Mercedes Rear-wheel Architecture), and take on a design inspired by the other brothers found on the market: C-Class, S-Class and A-Class. Gorden Wagener, current director for Mercedes' design, will try to provide for the sedan a series of harmonious curved lines that are not as aggressive as on the current generation.

The interior will also borrow the contemporary spirit of the current models, and will even copy the large screen found on the S-Class.
MRA architecture allows the installation of a diesel and gasoline hybrid version, which is requested by the European public obsessed with fuel efficiency. We cannot forget to include the current engines on the C-Class, including the twin-turbo unit focused on performance.

As with the current generation, there will be four body styles: coupe, convertible, sedan (long-wheelbase sedan) and station wagon. We will also get a performance AMG version, which will give up the V8 engine displacing 5.5 liters and rated at 540 horsepower for the new 4.0 liter V8 engine. This would provide more horsepower even when compared to the AMG GT supercar.

The new model will have the code W213, and it is certain that it will be an automobile with a lighter weight compared to the current model. British journalists from CAR Magazine say that the next generation E-Class will be 70 to 150 kg lighter thanks to extensive use of aluminum. Also, it seems that the new E-Class will use a new turbo diesel engine with six in-line cylinders. This engine will have a displacement of 2.9 liters and will provide 313 hp. However, there will be a version with four turbochargers which will take the number up to 400 hp.

If the new 2.9-liter diesel engine pleases those who want performance, people at Mercedes also thought about those who want an efficient car too. The most fuel efficient diesel engine which will be equipped on the new E-Class is the powerful four-cylinder 1.6-liter unit.

It offers 123 hp and emits only 99 g CO2 / km. Also, there will be hybrid variants too. For Europe, the future E-Class hybrid will combine the 2.0-liter engine with an electric motor of 82 hp, while in the US the hybrid will get a 3.0-liter V6 engine paired with an electric motor of 109 hp. There was also the possibility of a hybrid diesel for the European market, but this version will appear later in the model's life cycle.

The new generation Mercedes E-Class is expected on the market mid-2016, meaning that the official debut could take place at the Detroit Motor Show, scheduled for January next year.
