Next Generation Mazda MX5 Platform Unveiled at New York
|   Monday, April 21, 2014
Sneak peak images of the next generation Mazda MX5 were showcased at the New York Motor Show and if you were expecting a complete car, think again. Mazda has showcased its new platform, along with transmission and suspension. This is expected to be the base on which their advanced vehicle will rest. Major modifications have not been made to their original formula, which was first used over 25 years back.

SkyActive remains a standard fit, along with a rear wheel drive setup and a four cylindered engine block behind its front axle.
This makes it a front / mid engine vehicle, performance however is yet to be ascertained. This vehicle is in its nascent stages. Hence, much cannot be revealed as of now. 50: 50 weight distributions enhance stability and body balance, which gives this vehicle low moment of inertia, along with better body control.

The chassis plays a major role in a vehicle's performance. Hence, we expect Mazda to work on the MX5, in order to help it stand out in a crowd. Various steering inputs are currently being made, which are expected to be incorporated into this chassis soon. Officials say that this variant of the MX5, will be the most compact in its entire lineup.

While its engine will be located close to the vehicle's center of gravity, Ride height will be lowest in class. This vehicle is being designed for drive precision and we will be getting just that. Advanced levels of refinement are to be made, which will determine driver's seating position, instrument cluster position and other details. Expect decent quality materials to be used on the interior.

However, considering the fact that this is Mazda, do not expect the unexpected. The entire concept is still on the drawing board and suggestions are being incorporated to its design, as we speak. Mazda's original MX5 was designed in a manner, which made it lightest in class and was designed to handle precisely how the driver wanted to. We could be expecting similar drive performances this time round too.

Use of lightweight materials on its exterior is predicted, while we are anticipating weight reduction close to 100 kg. Body structure rigidity is slated to be enhanced, while overall body weight should be close to 1076 kg, making this vehicle a featherweight. If a fabric roof is installed, overall weight could be down to 1000 kg. Engine options are yet to be revealed, although we currently expect Mazda's 2.0 liter SkyActive Petrol engine to be available.

Exterior styling hints came in earlier this year, from Mazda's designer Pete Birtwhistle, who said that exterior body panels would be shaped in a more aggressive pattern. The original MX5 was rounded and aerodynamic and we expect major modifications to be made to its actual design. Mazda has a few other interesting launches up their sleeve, which we will get back with shortly. Stay tuned for latest news and updates and come back soon for additional details, as we bring you live updates from Mazda.
