New Supra Will Be A Hybrid With BMW Turbocharged Engine And Toyota Supercapacitor

There are new details revealed about the successor to the famous Toyota Supra, which will be designed and built alongside the new Z4, BMW and the Japanese manufacturer acting jointly in this matter. The new sports cars are expected on the market in 2017.

Two years have passed since Toyota and BMW have signed a partnership for the construction of sports cars. Now, thanks to sources within Toyota, more details about the common platform and engines that the new next generation Toyota Supra and BMW Z4 Roadster will use.

Both cars are scheduled to be launched on the market in the next three years, but BMW will handle both equipments and design patterns. Toyota will add his own style to the sport model, which will be inspired by the FT-1concept. If the main effort is left to the Germans, Toyota will bring its contributions to the exterior design, additional technology to propulsion, modified chassis and the emblem.

BMW will use the experience gained in building new chassis with lightweight materials, such as steel and aluminum, and bodywork panels from carbon fiber, similar of the models of the "i" range to minimize weight and increase performance and fuel efficiency.

This combination will form the basis for the joint efforts to revive the Toyota Supra, which will benefit from the latest BMW construction technologies. With regard to the successor of the BMW Z4, it is developed as a convertible, so we can expect the new Supra will follow in the footsteps of BMW. Although the design of the new Toyota sports car has not been finalized, sources confirmed that the radical FT-1 will strongly influence the final design as suggested by CGI images from Holiday Auto.

The sources have also insisted that the engine and transmission for Toyota will be provided by BMW, and the four-cylinder turbocharged 2.0-liter unit will be the main propeller. Toyota's four-cylinder unit will be accompanied by the latest hybrid technology, which uses a "super conductor", making the new sports model a hybrid plug-in too, which offers up to 260 kW / 350 hp.

Clues to this next-generation hybrid and the electric motor mounted in the front can be found on the Yaris Hybrid R concept too, unveiled last year at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

If it will have four-wheel drive, recently contradicted by Toyota technical director, Tetsuya Tada, who said it would be only rear-wheel drive, the new Toyota Supra will have three electric motors - two in front and one in back.

Apparently, the Toyota Supra will be equipped only with the plug-in hybrid drive, customers not having the option of the standard BMW turbo engine only, which is in conformity with trends of Japanese companies to focus on hybrid technology , and the desire to somehow differentiate the new Supra.

The engines will be designed by Toyota but will be built by BMW, and both cars will have a weight of less than 1400 kg.
