New Subaru Ascent Concept - 7-seater SUV Set to Conquer US Market
|   Thursday, May 11, 2017
Last year, at the Auto Show in Los Angeles Subaru presented the concept of a potential 7-seat SUV called VIZIV-7. Looking now at the Auto Show in New York, the Japanese manufacturer confirmed the future SUV with 7 seats for series production with the new Subaru Ascent concept!

The future series SUV will be built on the global platform which debuted last year on the new generation Impreza. The Subaru Ascent concept is a little smaller in size than VIZIV-7, with 5,049 mm in length, 1,989 mm in width, 1,839 mm in height and a wheelbase of 2,972 mm.

This new platform will be used at one time for all Subaru models. It is therefore very flexible: it can be suited to a compact car, or for this Ascent, the largest Subaru production model.

Although it has similar looks to VIZIV-7, the new Ascent has an aspect closer to the series production. It seems that if we put conventional handles, practical mirrors, less sophisticated front lights, get rid of the tactile surfaces on the interior which replaced buttons, we basically have a production model!
As a side note, the same could be said about Volvo's concept, transforming it into a future 7-seater SUV production, namely the Tribeca's successor.

With so many utility vehicles on the market that try to attract potential customers with an active lifestyle image, it is quite difficult to find a name that was not already used. The choice of the Japanese, Ascent, is quite good, although it is dangerously close to Ascender, the name of a model that failed in the market, a GMC Envoy, rebuilt a few years ago by Isuzu.

The Ascent concept adopts an evolved style, which starts from ideas put into practice by the Viziv-7 model, that debuted in 2016 in Los Angeles. The Ascent concept comes with the same chiseled headlamps that extend on the wings and about the same type of bodywork. Therefore, the details suggests that this model is very close to the production version. Basically, the concept resembles an oversized Forester model.

The interior has, besides the seven seats (important for sale), a central display visible from any angle, which looks quite ergonomic.
The power of this concept is provided by a boxer engine with direct injection and turbocharger, which can otherwise be met on the series model too. The manufacturer did not give other details about the engine, not even if it has four or six cylinders.

Normally, in this class the cars are powered by six-cylinder engines, but recently, the manufacturers like Ford or Mazda have experimented with four-cylinder engines, in particular to increase the efficiency of cars.

The new Ascent will go into production in 2018 at the company's factory in Lafayette, Indiana. Unfortunately, the model will be sold exclusively in North America, a market that seems to be enchanted by SUV with three rows of seats.

Besides this Ascent concept, Subaru came to New York Auto Show with some interesting models. Among them the upgraded version of the Outback, and the restored Crosstrek version.
