New Nissan Pulsar Targets VW Golf And Audi A3 Refinement Levels

Nissan does not want to position the new Pulsar as a compact that relies primarily on sportsmanship. The Japanese want the audience to see in the new Pulsar a comfortable and high tech car. Given that the all car manufacturers focus on fair play and aggressive design to conquer the audience in the compact segment, Nissan has understood the need to get out of line and try another recipe.

The new Pulsar, the C-segment Japanese proposal, wants to be a different car from its opponents, relying on more important issues.
According to the Japanese automaker, the new Pulsar went into production at the Nissan plant in Sunderland, United Kingdom, and will be a product oriented towards passenger comfort, and not necessarily for sportsmanship.

This is recognized even by Andy Palmer, vice president of Nissan, which defines the Pulsar as a transitional element between the Qashqai compact crossover and smaller models in the range.

Pulsar shall maintain in the range of old Qashqai customers, therefore it will have crossover characteristics.

Referring to the comfort level that the new compact will provide, Palmer made a brave assertion, saying that the Pulsar will prove to have a level of sophistication superior to that of German rivals such as the Volkswagen Golf, and Audi A3.

"I'm not looking for a car that is ultimately very very sporty. I'm looking for something that can transition a customer from a Qashqai to a hatchback. It needs the same DNA, but we want to keep ex-Qahsqai buyers in the Nissan family. It has to have a familiar design and handling. It's very smooth, and doesn't transmit impulses back into the car."

"[The Pulsar] is very solid, and very neutral. Yesterday I knocked the VDC [stability control] off and starting sliding it through a few roundabouts! It's very balanced, but we haven't given it particularly fast steering. The steering is quite light, so it's good for urban use and normal customers. The NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) is better than our competitors. Wind noise is excellent, and structural noise is very good" said Nissan's Vice President, Andy Palmer for Britain's Autoexpress.

Asked what makes the Pulsar any different than the current Qashqai, Palmer stated that the "hatchback presents an emotional design exterior and interior tech." Moreover, Palmer wanted to clarify that the profile of the new Pulsar is the best outlined in its segment, because other rivals rely more on the front and rear aspects of the car and less on the sides. This feature has been called revolutionary as part of the new compact's identity.

"The side view of the car [marks it out]. Most competitors have a nice front and nice rear but are pretty slab sided. So, we've tried to get a bit more design emotion into the side of the car. It's also more techny than a Qashqai inside."
The Nissan Pulsar will arrive in European showrooms this fall.
