New Hydrogen Powered Honda Clarity Debut At Tokyo
|   Sunday, November 01, 2015
Honda wants to revolutionize the world with a hydrogen electric car that goes 700 kilometers on one tank.
Honda is another Japanese manufacturer that made an electric drive based on hydrogen fuel cells as early as the end 90s. During this time period several prototypes were made, including one based on the sports car Honda S2000, and a pilot model called FCX Clarity, which was even delivered to some consumers for tests in real life.

Lo and behold at the Tokyo Motor Show this year the Japanese disclosed another electric car powered by hydrogen which is ready for production too!
Formerly known as Honda FCV, in Tokyo the model has revealed its name - Honda Clarity.
A direct competitor for Toyota's Mirai, it unveiled its forms, sometimes very controversial, however, the technology is the most important things in this model.

Initially, the Japanese automaker will sell its hydrogen powered model only to legal entities. Sales of the proposed model to regular customers will begin after they will assess feedback from the first customers. Thereafter, the manufacturer will start marketing this car in the markets of USA and Europe too, where rivals from Toyota already sell the Mirai model.

The car dimensions are 4,985 mm x 1,895 mm x 1,475 mm. In the passenger compartment is enough space for five people to sit comfortably.
The entire propulsion system, whose sizes were determined by the volume occupied by a V6 engine, was placed at the front of the vehicle in order to not reduce the interior space or the trunk volume. Each fuel cell lost 1mm in thickness compared to the original FCX Clarity, allowing the compaction of the whole package by 33 percent. The power of the electric motor increased to 130 kW (177 hp) while the capacity of the package increased by 60 percent to 3.1 kW per liter of hydrogen.

Those at Honda say that the whole system of hydrogen fuel cells is as compact as a V6 motorization displacing 3.5 liters. This is why it was possible to place it under the hood of a sedan with five seats. The most interesting feature of the model is its overall range of 700 kilometers. Compared with its main rival, Toyota Mirai, we are talking about a 200-kilometer difference in favor of the Clarity Fuel Cell.

The hydrogen container of the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell is pressurized at 70 MPa and can be refilled in three minutes, similar to that of a conventional car. The electric motor of this model delivers 174 hp more than the previous generation and is comparable with the power provided by a midsize sedan equipped with a 2.0-liter diesel engine. Also, Honda offers a system called Power Exporter 9000, which can transmit the electricity produced by the fuel cell system of the car to the public electricity network, designed for the natural disasters and other events of this type.

Sales of the new Honda Clarity begin in 2016. With the support of Honda Europe more free hydrogen stations that will generate hydrogen through solar panels will appear. The first station of this kind will appear in Swindon, UK, where they produce Honda cars for the European market and beyond. In Japan, the Honda Clarity will cost 7.66 million yen or about 57.800 euros (63.630 dollars).
