New Generation Chevrolet Volt Gets Crossover Sibling Named Crossvolt
|   Sunday, January 11, 2015
After launching in January the second generation Chevrolet Volt, General Motors aims at broadening the family with a new member, namely the Crossvolt, a crossover that aims to bring more customers to the American's hold. It is not known whether it will be launched in Europe too.

The story of the Chevrolet Volt model which has gone around the world through the propulsion solution invented by American engineers from General Motors, is preparing a second generation.
It will be presented at the Detroit Motor Show in mid-January, and promises an evolution of the Voltec package.

This package in the first generation offered on an electric motor that spins the wheels and a petrol one acting as a generator that charges the batteries when they are low on power. The information is already known as the model was subjected to a set of photo and video teasers that General Motors released near year's end. What was not known until now is the fact that the second generation of the Volt will not be represented by a single model, but by the family which will receive in addition to the mid-sized sedan a compact crossover with the same range characteristics.

The information is not official yet, but journalists over the Atlantic learned about the plans of Chevrolet, after the American brand registered at the Trademark Office the Crossvolt name, which will likely become the future model name. Obviously, the new body version will not be released any later, probably, than 2016.

In fact, GM has registered this name for the second time. Initially, this name was registered in 2011, but, because it was not used the trademark expired last month. To become legal, the company registered the name again.

The General Motors decision to develop a family for the future Volt is very interesting from a European perspective. Thus, the first information about GM plans shows a reserved position, in terms of launching the new model in Europe too. Given the fact that Chevrolet was withdrawn from the European market the models should be sold under the Opel brand, but GM had decided that the Opel Ampera - the European version of the Volt – is not to receive a new generation, but a facelift to refresh model in order to analyze customer response.

We must remember that the Chevrolet Volt and Opel Ampera, received in 2012 the title of European Car of the Year, but the sales were modest then: if in 2013, we are talking about 3184 customers in Europe (down by 40 percent over the previous year), the first five months of 2014 have brought Opel only 332 customers, a decrease of 67 percent compared to the same period of the year. Moreover, only 46 Germans have chosen the Ampera between January-May 2014. This is a demoralizing figure for a model which has to go on the road with the hope that it can become the "missing link" between cars with an internal combustion engines and those with electric motors.

In any case, it is clear that the Toyota Prius V and Ford C-Max Hybrid will have a new competitor if GM decides to go on with a series version.
