New Compact Lexus NX SUV Loses Diesel in Europe, Relies On Hybrid System Instead
|   Thursday, June 12, 2014
Lexus Europe has published a series of information about the engine versions that the NX crossover, the newest member of the premium family belonging to the Japanese manufacturer, will adopt at its European launch.

The new Lexus NX arrives in the premium SUV market, and will be a direct competitor to the BMW X3, Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLK and Volvo XC60. This model is inspired by the spectacular design of the LF-NX concept, presented last year.
But the new model is based on aggressive and angular lines seriously contrasting with the quiet design displayed by its German rivals.

The new model will not have a diesel version, preferring to continue on the equivalent Lexus hybrid engine of this type. The new Lexus NX 300h will be the first available version of the new model which will be commissioned in European showrooms beginning in the fall of 2014.

According to preliminary information provided by those from Lexus, the NX 300h model will have 195 hp and will be available in two traction versions: front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). The difference between the two versions is given both in the way in which the power is transmitted to the wheels and the complexity of the propulsion system.

Thus, the 4x4 version will have two electric motors that will complement a 2.5-liter petrol engine, while the front-wheel drive version will have only an electric motor coupled to the same 2.5-liter Atkinson unit. The purpose Lexus is to achieve emission levels that fall below 120 g CO2 / km, significantly less than the emissions displayed by the least potent diesel engine on the new generation BMW X3 (2.0 sDrive 18d, 150 hp, 131 g CO2 / km).

The second engine, which will make its appearance on the Lexus NX, will be a petrol one. It will enter into equipment version, called 200t, and will be a 2-liter turbo unit that develops 235 hp and 350 Nm, and which is still under development. The new engine will equip the Lexus NX in February 2015 and will be available in all-wheel-drive version, and for the top F Sport equipment. The automatic gearbox with six steps is developed specifically for the NX.

Preliminary information provided by Lexus included the listing of interesting technological systems which will appear on the new crossover. Thus, the NX version will pamper customers by giving them the ability to wirelessly charge phones through a special tray that will be on the center console, or using active cruise control that works at any speed. This is an absolute novelty in the segment, and helps the car brake to a stop if necessary when it detects that the car in front has stopped completely, even on the highway.

Other upgrades include a latest generation touch interface which displays by default the G forces that push the car, head-up displays, and sensors to detect highway traffic lanes, or help with its backing up from the parking lot. Also, in terms of comfort it was announced that the car will have the roomiest trunk in its class.
