New Compact Crossover To Arrive Soon: The Renault Kadjar
|   Saturday, February 07, 2015
Renault has confirmed that the upcoming compact SUV will be called Kadjar and the first presentation of the new model will be held in Paris on February 2, following which the car will be disclosed to the general public at Geneva Motor Show in March. The French say that the new Kadjar (original name variants were Racoon, or Djeyo) will begin to show up in dealerships in June.

With this new model the French hope to have more success than the Koleos, a car that last year ranked only 20th place in this category's ranking.
The new model will have a smaller size than the Koleos, its length being only 4.52 meters. The car will initially be offered in a five-seater version, after which, most likely in autumn, the version with seven seats will appear.

Renault has had luck with the Capture, an urban smaller SUV, and would like to repeat history in this segment which proves to be more dynamic than the compact sedans. Therefore, the lines of the new model are quite similar to what the small SUV has.

The only "true" SUV from the Renault portfolio, which has been successful, is the low-cost model Duster, which is actually the most sold model of the entire Renault range, now manufactured in factories on three continents.

In 2014, the Duster SUV marketed under both Renault and Dacia sold 395,000 copies.
Kadjar is a play on words derived from the juxtaposition of two particles "kad", meaning four-wheel all-terrain vehicle ("quad") and "jar", aiming to express agility and dynamism. On top of that, the sounds and spelling of the name indicate an exotic universe, one that invites adventure as well as exploring new horizons; that's the theory anyway.

The initial "K" evokes strength and power, while also being naturally assimilated into the family of crossovers bearing the Renault brand, like the Captur and the Koleos models.

The new model will be built on Renault-Nissan's Common Module Family platform (CMF), just like the Qashqai model. The CMF architecture, reveled June last year, will eventually be used to underpin 14 models across the brand's ranges.

Laurens van den Acker, Renault design chief, described the new car as being created "in strong collaboration with Nissan, but with a careful eye on not taking anything away from either side. Conceptually, this car will not challenge conventions. We want to hit the same sweet spot of head and heart that we did with the Captur."

According to data from IHS Automotive, Renault is expected to sell 118,000 units of the Kadjar in 2016, its first full year of sales. In this way, it will be ranked third in this segment, behind the alliance partner Nissan with its Qashqai and Volkswagen's Tiguan.

"While the Kadjar and the Qashqai both stem from the same broader company, Renault needs to compete in popular segments in Europe, which will help it appeal to customers and support its manufacturing base. Renault is also likely to be looking to attract previous customers who have jumped ship as they didn't have a competitive model in this segment before" said IHS analyst Ian Fletcher said.
