My Electric Avenue Project Commences at a Budget of 9 Million Pounds
|   Friday, April 11, 2014
A new project aimed at witnessing the impact of charging electric vehicles on our current electricity supply system, was just uncovered at Buckinghamshire this week and this survey has a total budget of £9 Million. Termed as "My Electric Avenue", this project plans on monitoring the impact generated by 11 different clusters of Nissan Leaf users, around the country, over the course of the next year and a half, to determine long term impacts this has on electricity supply.

If a large number of electric vehicles are plugged in simultaneously to the mother supply station, it could have a negative impact on both the supply and vehicle. Consequences of this activity are yet to be known and this is the primary reason for this test having been approved. This scheme involves people being supplied with Nissan Leaf's to use for the duration of this test and they are based out of localities, powered by a single substation.

This calculates load and effort factors that will determine the need to develop infrastructure, if any. While these vehicles are being charged £100 per month, recharging equipments have been installed without a deposit. Demand for electricity reaches its peak point within 5.30 – 6.30 pm and experts are currently unaware of the impacts of excessive electric demand at a specific point of time.

If the number of electric powered vehicles actually increases – which they steadily are – we need to be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of current infrastructure. A new monitoring technology known as Esprit has been fitted to the substation and charging posts for every individual, to calculate and record the affects of excessive electricity demand. Saving the environment from harmful CO2 emissions, can have adverse effects on our social lives, as there are needs for certain changes.

However, technology such as photovoltaic cells do not required power generated through conventional methods. However, they are quite unreliable and ineffective for long durations. Local electricity channels are not designed to discharge heavy amounts of electricity at a time. Participants have to regularly monitor electricity readings before and after the charging takes place. In order to prevent their local over head cables from melting down, newer technology could involve underground cables for better protection.

However, the future of this project solely rests on the result of this current test. If the need for infrastructural development rises, we would see such a transformation in every country, while development would initialize from First World Countries. This project was announced a year back, although it failed to stir things up back then. Experts have been campaigning for the need to dig up old electric infrastructure in favor of new ones, capable of carrying much higher load capacities.

The results of this test are highly awaited and we will keep you updated on all developments and news. Various companies have stepped in to help support this venture financially and some of these are Carbon Futures, Fleetdrive Electric and Nissan. Local power distribution companies have also been instructed to stay on edge, in case of emergencies.
