Musk, Wards Tussle Over Sales Figures
|   Monday, December 29, 2014
With all of the outlets available to car industry leaders sometimes the temptation to shoot from the lip is just too overwhelming.

A case in point is the current tussle that Elon Musk, the flamboyant head of Tesla, and Wards Auto World find themselves involved in. At issue is Ward's estimate of Tesla sales performance over the first nine months of the year.

Because analysts and the industry trade journal used estimates of the electric manufacturer's sales performance, says Green Car Reports, Musk found that his fenders were rumpled.
The flamboyant chief executive officer decided to shoot from the lip when he launched a broadside from Twitter.

Musk was answering an item that appeared in Wards and the Wall Street Journal that noted Tesla sales were off a full 26 percent for the first nine months of the year.

To which Musk tweeted in reply that the story was just wrong as, he claimed, that sales were up 65 percent for the month of September.

Off the top, it is a case of oranges and apples in comparison. Wards and the Journal deduced sales figures for the first nine months of the years, while Musk was talking about single-month performance.

As Green Car Reports noted, the fault lies with Musk as he firmly believes that sales figures are only company business, rather than public business. So, while they may release their sales performance figures, they tend to be late and are sometimes incomplete. Tesla is the only major automaker to file its performance reports well after the month-end figures used by the rest of the industry.

So, dealing with late and incomplete information and gleaning their information from other sources, analysts and journalists are forced into the position of having to deduce sales numbers from a variety of unofficial sources. "From serial-number logs to estimates by industry experts, if the real data isn't being provided, people will do their best to estimate," the online outlet noted.

The issue will likely be moot when the company releases its third-quarter performance figures shortly.
