More Is Better: 2013 Bentley Continental GT Speed
|   Thursday, June 21, 2012
Who here has not heard about the Bentley Continental? Even if you hate cars with a passion it is basically impossible not to have heard the name once or twice in your life. The British automaker once again takes the spotlight with the launching of the 2013 Bentley Continental GT Speed. Keeping pace with its unofficial tradition, this latest model is the fastest car yet. Some might argue the Continental Supersports holds this title, but as we shall see, the performance figures for the two are nearly identical.

Ok, so we all know about the W12 engine powering Bentley's cars. In this version, engineers have outdone themselves and managed to squeeze 616 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. Note that this is the second generation Conti Speed. Its predecessor was only capable of 600 horses and 553 lb-ft. Now regarding the Supersports; that was a vehicle that developed 621 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. The 5 missing horses are not enough to make a perceivable difference. Thus, we arrive at the idea mentioned in the beginning.

All 4 wheels contribute to setting the vehicle in motion. They get the necessary power via an 8 speed automatic transmission system, the same system that can be found in every other Continental GT. One surprise comes from the top speed figure: 205 mph. Compared to its standard W12 engines, this one is able to propel the car 7 mph faster. Official estimations further state that 60 mph are reach in 4 seconds. This beauty even outtakes the latest Aston Martin, the AM 310 Vanquish by 0.1 seconds.

Moving on, we find that Bentley has outfitted its new Conti GT Speed with "unique" chassis tuning. That means that we get a sharper steering, a tweaked suspension, plus a lowered ride height; just how low we still don't know. The whole thing rides on standard 21 inches of special wheels.

As far as looks go, the differences are subtle. The tailpipes now have a special finishing touch, while at the front end all mesh gets a darker color compared to what a non-Speed has. Also, Bentley says that the cabins now come with the Mulliner Driving Specification upgrade pack. What that means specifically, we still don't know, but judging by previous GT models benefiting from this package, at least a carbon fiber trim is available.

Pricing is likely to go into the 220-230,000 range. More date on that as the launching date draws nearer, which will be sometime this autumn. The estimate is based on the Conti GT Speed first generation price tag of 214,000 dollars to which inflation is added, as well as other variable costs. One thing is certain, however: it will be cheaper than the Supersport was. But then again, when you have more money than you need 280,000 dollars don't seem to be all that important. After all, we are talking about Bentley and every dollar, pound and euro invested in one is a placement well worth the effort.
