Mitsuoka Orochi Receives an Evangelion Farewell Edition
|   Thursday, January 08, 2015
The Japanese from Mitsuoka, creators of the ugliest car currently in production, are preparing to abandon the model Orochi, and launch its farewell edition - Evangelion Edition.

Mitsuoka Orochi is probably the ugliest car ever made, and still under production, but it will receive a farewell edition. The niche Japanese manufacturer announced that it will build 11 copies of the Mitsuoka Evangelion Orochi's Edition, a version with a more eccentric design of the model.

Two months ago, the Japanese announced that they will pull out of production this model, but those at Mitsuoka Orochi insist to shock retinas with a special paint for their strange creation. In the purest Japanese style, the Evangelion Edition is devoted to a series of anime called Neon Genesis Evangelion.

This anime series focuses on a group of children selected to pilot the Evangelion giant mechas and battle evil Angels in order to save the world. Combine that with the name Orochi, which is taken from an eight-tailed and eight-headed dragon, you get an idea of the strangeness the model revels in. And in a sick way that is a good thing.

While the Mitsuoka Orochi's Final Edition version is believed to be the swan song of the model, and costs the yen equivalent of 89,900 euro, the Evangelion Edition comes to cost the equivalent of 109,000 euro. It has a V6 motorization from Toyota, displacing 3.3 liters, which develops 233 hp and 328 Nm of torque, and is offered only in the company of a five-speed automatic transmission that engages the rear wheels.

The Mitsuoka manufacturer used the Honda NSX platform to build the Orochi model. Unfortunately for them, and for fans, the platform will no longer be offered for the specialized body builder. Thus, it is forced to find another "donor" for future creations. All units are built manually by 504 employees who manufacture about 1,000 vehicles per year. Mitsuoka Motors was founded in 1968 and produces automobiles since 1979, using multiple platforms of the Japanese manufacturers.

The things that make the model appear strange and ugly even, are considered to be the optical blocks and the front grille. But liking the car to Evangelion is pure genius, aiming specifically for those who lived and died for the sake of EVA-01 (awesome mecha!).

However, there's nothing about the Mitsuoka Orochi Evangelion Edition which might draw "normal" people to it. In fact, it might have the opposite effect and make people back away slowly from it and maybe even the owner of the car.

On the other hand, the interior is really good and it's sad that that so little attention has been directed towards it. The 2 seats of the car and the steering wheel have all been covered in Alcantara. The dashboard is clean and smooth and the center console is carefully arranged to include the car's gears and knobs, plus a small infotainment system at the base of the console.

Regarding the Mitsuoka Orochi's graphics, they were designed by Ikuto Yamashita, one of the most respected artists in the manga and anime world, who served as a mechanical engineering designer for the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise.
