Mitsuoka Orochi, One Of Strangest Cars In The World, Preparing For The End
|   Friday, May 02, 2014
When asked about Japan's cars makers the answer is Toyota, Mazda or Honda. Major names which everyone in the world knows, right? Then, how about Mitsuoka and its Orochi model?

This model, Orochi, was originally built on a platform of the more renowned Acura NSX model, is generally thought to be one of the strangest vehicles (some say ugliest) that can be found on the roads.

The strangeness is due to the characteristics of the model: elliptical four eyes and pursed-lips grille, portal ventilators below the hood, although the engine is found in the back, Lamborghini-inspired scissor doors, side windows like on the McLaren F1, and a bizarre mix of curves that look like not much effort went into making them.
The model was named after a mythical dragon, and was initially launched in 2001 but only entered production in 2007. It was sold in "limited" numbers.

Some went so far to describe the car as something that you get after crossing a blowfish and a lizard. Indeed, the result is unique, but that alone is not enough to keep it on the production lines.

Right now, the Mitsuoka Orochi, is built on the platform of the Honda NSX and will soon see its end from series production. The manufacturer that announced the last Orochi series entitled "Final Edition" in September.

The announcement comes from the manufacturing company, an independent carmaker in Japan. The last Orochi five units will be painted in a special shade of "Golden Pearl" and the purple nuance "Fuyoru". In the standard version, this model has a front spoiler, rear winglets and 19 inch alloy wheels with bespoke design. Inside, each unit of the final series, will feature Alcantara upholstery in two colors, metal ornaments, and steering wheel covered in Alcantara too.

The Mitsuoka Orochi Final Edition has a starting price of 12,700,000 yen, meaning 89,900 euros or 124,180 dollars. The engine is taken from Toyota and is a V6 engine displacing 3.3 liters. It provides 233 horsepower (172 kW) and a torque of 328 Nm (242 lb-ft). The total weigh of the car is 1,580 kg (3,483 lb).

The engine is accompanied by a five-speed automatic transmission that engages the rear wheels. Despite the high price, the model does not impress with its dynamic performance. This model becomes attractive to its customers through the unusual appearance, inspired by the old British models of the 1950 and 1960.
Although it starts with Mitsu, the company's name has very little in common with the well-knonw Mitsubishi. The less Mitsuoka is a small manufacturer located in Toyama that remodels Japanese cars in particular.

The Mitsuoka manufacturer is a specialized Bodywork Builder. The plant has 504 employees and makes about 1,000 units per year. They have been producing cars since 1979, and use platforms that belong to several manufacturers from Japan. Mitsuoka Motors is the youngest automobile manufacturer in Japan, the company being founded in 1968.
