Mitsubishi Working on the Evolution II MiEV for the Pikes Peak Challenge
|   Monday, August 05, 2013
Mitsubishi is currently working on an electric super car which will take part in the Pikes Peak hill climbing challenge, a legendary event held at Colorado each year. Toyota is the current record holder at the event, securing their win at the track with their electric car back in 2012. Mitsubishi plans on outdoing Toyota this year with its revolutionary new electric vehicle.

Mitsubishi is developing the electric platform on the Evolution II and two units of the MiEV will take part in the event.
Behind the wheels of the vehicle will be Hiroshi Masuoka, two times Dakar Rally Champion and Greg Tracy, Pikes Peak motor bike champion. The current record held by Toyota is of 10 minutes 15.38 seconds and Mitsubishi is confident of setting up a new record this time.

The all new MiEV Evolution II is based on the iMiEV production which took part last year. However, the new vehicle is lighter than its predecessor while sporting an all new transmission system. Body roll has been minimized while the center of gravity is well balanced. This gives the vehicle appropriate weight distribution – a very important feature on off road vehicles. The down force generated due to the advanced aerodynamics of the car is also 66 percent greater than its predecessor.

The electric engine displaces 134 BHP, which is sufficiently high considering the weight, giving this weight an added power to weigh advantage. Two electric motors have been mounted to each of the axles, generating 536 BHP from the earlier 321. The torque operating range is also wider than before hence giving the MiEV Evolution II more power than before.

The power delivery is also quite linear which means that the MiEV is an overall more performance friendly vehicle than its predecessor. Although the motors remain unchanged, massive power generation makes up for the general loss of power. The MiEV features the use of advanced electronic measures and the Symmetrical All Wheel Control works wonders for the machine. Regenerative braking is also an important addition on the MiEV and this makes up for a lot of power consumed during the journey.

Torque vectoring is also of prime importance which helps save up on electricity. The MiEV draws power from a 50 kWh lithium ion battery and is composed especially of carbon fiber. Reinforced polymer casing is also used which helps the vehicle retain strength while decreasing the overall weight of the vehicle. The car also gets a stronger underside which enhances down force better than the Evolution I.

The Evolution II is composed on an aluminum chassis while the body is composed out of reinforced carbon fiber. The overall weight of the vehicle is expected to be below 1400 kg while this vehicle is perfect for the hill climb challenge. Mitsubishi posted the second fastest time at the hill climb challenge in 2012 and as a result their loss has given them the knowledge required to help them through to the top spot this year. The team is surely wishing for the same.
