Mitsubishi Thinks The Future Is Electric
|   Friday, December 05, 2014
The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X will be the last generation of the Japanese performance model, and officials say that the future of the brand will belong to electric vehicles, including this segment.

Namei Koketsu, Japanese brand spokesman, said in the past that there will not be a successor to the Lancer Evolution, which is a four-wheel drive sedan, and has a gasoline powered engine modified for high performance. This was an announcement which left open the possibility of a hybrid substitute for the Evo model.

The official has completed the declaration stating that future performance models from Mitsubishi will be available with propulsion systems using electric vehicles technology. The statements made by Mitsubishi's officials suggest the possibility of a hybrid successor to the Lancer Evolution equipped with a small displacement turbo engine and two electric motors to increase performance. Another statement suggests a crossover instead of the Lancer Evolution and the latest statement from an official announces an electrical replacement for the Lancer Evolution X.

In an interview, Executive Vice President of Mitsubishi Motors North America, Dan Swearingen said that the future lies with models like the MiEV Evolution III and that Evo's time is past. Swearingen referred to the racing car used by Mitsubishi in the 2014 edition Pikes Peak race.

The competition model had four electric motors, which provided a total of 600 hp, and has all-wheel drive. The batteries used by the MiEV Evolution III are taken from iMiEV, the electric series model belonging to the Japanese brand, just like the charging port. Unfortunately, Swearingen did not explain the connections that are suggested between the competition model and the future replacement for the Lancer Evo X.

Until we say good-bye to the Lancer Evo X for good, Mitsubishi will launch a last edition of it which will have more horsepower, a modified suspension and other minor changes. Evo's swan song will be released somewhere in the summer of 2015 and will have a limited production to 2,000 copies. Even though brand representatives did not specify when the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X would be removed from production, many voices announce that the performance sedan of the Japanese manufacturer will not be produced in 2016.

Right now, Mitsubishi sales are up 30.5 percent so far in 2014 thanks in large part to the new Mirage.
Speaking of which, it is confirmed for the U.S. market. Swearingen confirms: "We're bringing the sedan version over." No date was advanced, but in a year or two it should appear in dealerships.

Also, we can expect a new Outlander to arrive at the 2015 New York Auto Show, namely the plug-in version. The launch will take place a few months after. The plug-in hybrid version of the Outlander Sport is under development, but before that model is ready to go, Mitsubishi needs to increase the PHEV components production to fulfill Outlander PHEV demand in Europe, Japan, and then the focus on the U.S.
