Mitsubishi Lancer Successor To Be Built Together With Renault-Nissan
|   Saturday, November 15, 2014
Mitsubishi will build two new sedan models in collaboration with Renault. The compact sedan will be sold globally, while the mid-range model will be designed for the North American market only.

Mitsubishi will replace the Lancer model with a new compact sedan that will be built on a Renault-Nissan platform. The Japanese manufacturer announced last year that it would begin a new partnership with Renault-Nissan, and now this will be materialized in two upcoming new models.
One is a medium sedan which will be designed only for the North American market, and the second is a compact sedan that will replace the current Lancer model and will be sold globally.

The first model that will result from the Japanese collaboration with Renault-Nissan is a medium sedan based on the Renault Latitude. It will be manufactured at the Renault Samsung plant in Busan, South Korea and will be sold on the North American market. Its debut is expected in two years.

Regarding the Lancer replacement, it will be a compact Renault or Nissan that will be sold under the Mitsubishi logo. Mitsubishi officials say it has not yet decided which compact model will play that role. Also, they do not know yet where it will be built.

Mitsubishi Motors Australia executive director of marketing declared for GoAuto he had no info on the platform to be used, but is very enthusiastic about the fact that a new small car will arrive in the range.

"These decisions are made at the highest levels of our organization and we haven't been advised of our parent company's intentions at this stage.

When the new models do become available, we'll make a decision based on where they fit within our line-up and whether we can establish a business case. The Australian small car market is strong so we'd be very keen to see a small segment model. But if it's a medium segment car, we'd have to consider the business case before making a decision about whether it to sell it in Australia."

The current Lancer generation is 7 years old and fights against rivals like the Toyota Corolla and Mazda3; both models have already been replaced in the past 18 months by newer generation models.

Mitsubishi has decided to abandon the development of sedans to focus on SUVs. In Europe it is enjoying success with the ASX and Outlander models, and plans do not stop there. In 2016, the ASX future model will arrive, and two years later we will have a new Pajero. Both SUVs will benefit from plug-in hybrid versions.

In addition to the partnership with Renault-Nissan, Mitsubishi collaborate with the French group PSA. For them, Mitsubishi builds the Peugeot 4008 and Citroen C4 Aircross and versions of the Mitsubishi I-MiEV named Citroen C-Zero and Peugeot iOn. The PSA group said last year that the alliance with Mitsubishi will not be affected by the new link with rivals from Renault.

Furthermore, Mitsubishi recently announced that it will provide a pick-up pattern for Fiat Chrysler group. It will be sold in Europe and Latin America from 2016 and will be based on the new generation of the L200. Production of the new model Mitsubishi L200 starts at the plant in Thailand later this year.
