Mercedes To Coordinate The Launch Of The Infiniti Compact
|   Tuesday, February 25, 2014
The future compact Infiniti, inspired by the Q30 concept, will be based on the front-wheel drive architecture of the A-Class and CLA models. Furthermore, Mercedes will directly supervise the birth of the Japanese compact.

The close links between Mercedes and Renault-Nissan Alliance will positively influence other auto brands within the groups. A prime example is the Infiniti, which will benefit from the German expertise to develop its new compact model, inspired as already mentioned by the Q30 concept.

Dieter Zetsche, head of Daimler, said the MFA (Modular Front Architecture), platform with front-wheel drive, on which Mercedes models like the GLA, CLA, A-Class and B-Class have arisen, will be borrowed to the Japanese for their first C segment model.

Andy Palmer, head of Infiniti, carried on the idea of working with Mercedes in terms of front-wheel drive models. Palmer argues that other Infiniti models will take on the MFA platform, referring directly to a small premium crossover, as is the current GLA. But Zetsche countered this statement by saying that "too many projects could be a concern for the German company's management."

Before collaborating with Renault-Nissan, Daimler was looking for other viable partners for a front-wheel drive platform. Before developing the current MFA the Germans even discussed with rivals. Zetsche admits that.

"When we were planning the current generation of front-wheel-drive vehicles we were entertaining a number of discussions with BMW, with Fiat, with VW to check whether it makes sense to do something together. Eventually, Daimler concluded that there was not much to be gained from working with any of these rivals. The benefits from working with a competitor were only marginal" said Zetsche.

"The Q30 is a very strategic model. It is sort of like Inifiniti's Qashqai because the Q30 is not a normal hatchback. We want to create a new unique concept. It's similar to the Qashqai from a strategic point of view because the premium segment is so dominated by the Germans, by sedans.

Creating our own image by going into the normal sedan area would be more difficult. It is a very competitive market. The strength of the Q30 is that it doesn't look like anything else. A class is A class, CLA is CLA, but Q30 is Q30. If you can buy similar things, people go to existing brands, that's why we want to create products that don't look like anything else. This is our strategy" declared Nissan design boss Shiro Nakamura.

The Infiniti Compact will compete directly against the BMW 1 Series and Audi A3. This model is an important part of Infiniti's growth strategy. The model will lead to more than three times its sales now, up to 500,000 units until March 2017, according to Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn.

When and if the objective is achieved, Infiniti would be in the position to own 10 percent of the global luxury segment. Right now, the United States is its largest market, China coming in second place.
