Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series
|   Tuesday, September 11, 2012
There is a new little girl in town – but one who roars. The Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series is the younger offshoot of the more common SLS AMG. But as far as charisma goes, there is much to differentiate this car, and anyone who has seen her tests on the road – footage of which was leaked last week – will know her to possess the deep rumbling voice of a sports car.

The SLS AMG is a difficult model to evaluate (or should we say, anticipate – it will only be released next year, so we are wary of making pre-emptive judgements).
It seems to follow in the line of certain new cars from the German manufacturer, like the new Mercedes A-Class 2012, in leaning towards a more aggressive presentation. It is also, however, a car that does not readily make compromises (revealingly, it only comes in a coupé body).

The expression Black Series, in Mercedes lingo, refers to specialised cars, generally more powerful and sporty than their alternatives. So we may expect this car to distinguish itself from its forebear by two main characteristics.

The first is, inevitably, pure performance. The ‘little girl' was thought out to have the heart of a demon – it is designed to be faster and more powerful, as well as lighter (a significant fifty kilos less than the standard model). The actual horsepower is bound to fall somewhere between 600 and 650.

The second difference is going to be style. The original SLS AMG already had a rapacious appearance to it. The Black Series ups this look by a gear (pun not intended). It has been modified on all sides and is perceivably shorter, meaning that it offers less air resistance. The passenger compartment is also a great deal smaller, as the car is intended for performance over comfort.

This Mercedes is, as we mentioned, a car that makes no compromises. Though it has an undisputable predatory leanness, its particular elegance will not suit everyone. The stark combination of black and white colours is not immediately friendly, and its powerful engine requires someone with the pulse to handle it (someone who, for example, is not put off by having to deal with its seven different gears).

Mercedes are clearly aware of all these things, so that the Black series will be released as a limited model, with only a selected few able to get their mitts on it. It is clearly bound to be one of the more prestigious, more stylish new Mercedes, and its price range will reflect its status (making it even more exclusive). The exact release date has not been announced, though it will likely be in the second half of 2013. Final judgements are postponed till then.
