Mercedes Presents New VR9 Protection S-Class Guard
|   Saturday, August 16, 2014
Mercedes-Benz began production of the S-Class Guard armored version of the company's flagship model. Hand built in Sindelfingen, near Stuttgart, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Guard is assembled together with other armored models like the E - Class (W212), M - Class (W166), G - Class (W463) and S - Class Pullman (VF 221). Mercedes builds the new S600 Guard only manually because robots do not have the necessary precision, according to the car manufacturer.

The new S-Class Guard provides VR9 level protection against military weapons that are "two times faster than a bullet fired from a revolver." The vehicle can also cope with shrapnel that comes from hand grenades and other similar types of weapons and explosives.

Weight was not specified, but the S-Class Guard is far from being a light vehicle, since only the windshield weighs 135 kg and measures 10 cm in thickness. To provide the best possible protection most areas of the cabin are covered with steel plates, 5 cm thick. Those who are less cautious may order a version with some lighter armor.

All areas of the glass are laminated and covered on the inside with a layer of polycarbonate. Also on the inside, customers will have a panic alarm system, opaque roller blinds, an emergency fresh air system, hydraulic side windows, gimbal rear LED reading lamps, a special rear cooling compartment and heated windscreen and side windows.

From a visual point, the new S-Class Guard looks the same as the S600, but can have four or five seats, with a load capacity of 350 liters. Under the hood is the same 6.0-liter V12 twin-turbo engine that makes 530 hp and 830 Nm of torque just like the S600 series model.

The S600 Guard has active suspension, as it has been useful in the case of the attempt on De Gaulle, and the run-flat tires from Michelin, which can travel about 30 kilometers under continuous fire.
Due to the total weight, speed is limited to just 210 km / h.

Currently available only in a S600 version, the armored version will cost about 200,000 euro more than the standard model, so the new Mercedes S-Class Guard will cost about 324,400 euro.
After this armored model Mercedes-Benz will launch a new S-Class Pullman flagship, 6.4 meters long and weighing over 5 tons, in 2015 at a cost of about 1 million euro.

The debut of the S-Class Guard armored factory is significant because it is the only armored version in which customers of these cars have any trust. This is even more important if we consider that this is not the first S-Class sedan armored version generation in 2014.

Thus, Trasco-Bremen has managed to field armored versions of the S - class before the automaker itself on a couple other occasions such as with the debut of the 1991 - 1998 W140 generation S-class.

Most often the differences between factory armored cars and those armored by third-party coachbuilders are frequently to the detriment of clients, though in practice the difference can often be a question of life and death.
