Mercedes Benz Working on GLK and GLC Class Vehicles
|   Monday, January 06, 2014
Mercedes Benz is all set to rediscover its crossover SUV segment with the launch of the GLK class. This series is expected to be sportier, lower, sleeker and more powerful than its current model, which is box shaped and not aerodynamic. Apart from design changes, Benz has gone a step further by deciding to introduce a five door Coupe to its GLC Class. Renderings of all these vehicles are currently available, even though they are yet to enter production.

Both the GLK and GLC will be based on the underpinnings of the latest C Class and should be available with four and six cylindered engine options. Even though a hybrid power train is currently under consideration, Mercedes Benz will not be launching it along with its first batch. Four-wheel drive is standard while we are not sure of optional rear or front wheel drive variants.

All engine options are mated to a nine speed automated transmission system while insiders reveal than Benz plans on making its Coupe segment, more up market than the Crossover segment. We could be looking at improved interior along with better finish work and trim levels. Without formal announcements however, this is very tough to figure out what is actually about to happen.

Insiders have also hinted at a base price hike and we could be looking at a base price level of $40,000. This is $3,000 more than the current base prices, although the next generation vehicles will be 4MATIC all wheel drive train based. If things go according to plan, we could be looking at the GLK and GLC variants in showrooms by 2016 – 2017. However, this is still a long shot and hence Mercedes Benz is officially tightlipped about the scenario.

BMW will be launching its face lifted X4 early next year and Mercedes Benz is working hard on an appropriate rival. This race of superiority between Germany's luxury brands will surely push up heat in the segment. This will increase competition in the premium car segment soon and we expect other companies to join in soon. Audi is comfortably placed in its segment although we can never be too sure.
