Mercedes Benz Will Not Build A Smaller Model Than The A Class
|   Friday, May 30, 2014
Mercedes Benz's A Class will not get a little brother, according to head of Daimler AG, cited by Automotive News. A smaller model than the A Class has no place in the Mercedes Benz portfolio at this time.

Regarding the Smart range, even the Daimler boss has not denied the possibility of launching a subcompact. In case of a possible small class model from Smart, Daimler boss says a final decision in this regard has yet to be taken.

"We had a long debate about whether we should expand Mercedes into the B [subcompact] segment and we decided this is not going to happen.
There is a possibility that Smart could expand into the subcompact segment, but we have not decided that yet," Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche said.

Rumors were going around saying the younger brother of the A Class was to see a 2018 launch under the name of X Class. The same voices were announcing a modified platform of the Renault Clio IV, as the technical basis for the German's future small class model.

Dieter Zetsche explained to journalists that such a configuration would be difficult to sell in a profitable way. Mercedes Benz already has a model based on a Renault platform, Citan utility respectively, for commercial offer. More than that, the cooperation between Daimler and Renault-Nissan has never excluded sharing platforms, as will happen with the future smart ForTwo and Renault Twingo. The future ForFour model from Smart could turn to a Renault platform, although this model will battle in a segment the Fiat 500 and Opel Adam operate.

The alleged X Class model from Mercedes Benz was intended to diminish the distance between the Smart range and Mercedes Benz's A Class. This supposed model should be a subcompact with front-wheel drive, and a cost of less than 20,000 euro.

The X Class range would have to include two bodywork versions and it would have rivaled the Mini hatchback, which reached its third generation, and the Audi A1 range. Those were the expectations if Daimler gave the green light for its development, but since it didn't we might as well forget about it for now.
Returning a bit the Smart range, the third generation Renault Twingo will be the technical platform for the future Smart range. This will give life for the future ForTwo and ForFour.

The Smart range will be unveiling this summer the third generation of the two-seater ForTwo and the second-generation of the ForFour four-seater. The new ForFour model will be approximately 3500 mm long and will go up against the aforementioned rivals Fiat 500 and Opel Adam. The gap between it and the A Class, which measures 4,292 mm, would have been ideal for the X Class.

"It's clear that there's an opportunity for a supermini. Such a car would offer plenty of volume for us, but it would also be tough to make profit from. For now, I don't see a need for us to go that way, but further down the line, it's a possibility," said Daimler's CEO.
