Mercedes Benz starts a revolution with the launch of the new S Class

Mercedes Benz has installed quite a few technologically advanced features in the next generation S Class luxury sedan which enables the vehicle to respond to its surrounding more than ever before. This vehicle is also expected to set new benchmarks in the field of automotive safety. The S Class vehicles are known to set benchmarks in the field of safety and the 2013 launch is set to repeat the custom. The new technology - called the Intelligent Drive – is expected to be used on all S Class vehicles in the future and it incorporates the synchronized use of smart sensors and alarms that work together to provide the maximum safety.

The new vehicle features the use of 25 new external sensors with infrared, visual light and ultra sonic sound detection system along with dedicated radar transmission that is expected to make this the safest S Class vehicle till date. The virtual eye can take note of close to 360 degrees near the car and for a distance up to 500 meters. However, the most important use of the camera has been for the rear view, which takes note of objects in front of the vehicle, within a 45 degree range and distance up to 50 meters.
Mercedes Benz has claimed to have designed the Intelligent Drive at their in house simulator, which is said to be the biggest such facility in the world.

The cars are sent into the simulator pod and the suitable virtual environment in created by the projector on the inner walls of the pod. The Intelligent Drive technology has been tested by over 500 drivers inside the simulator and their experiences recorded, to create the best results possible. Mercedes Benz is looking to create Autonomous Car technology and Accident Free Drive experiences in the future. However, this is just an ambition and the company has promised neither.

The new Adaptive Cruise Control keeps the vehicle in lane, both in straight patches and in small curves with the help of radar and stereo vision. Distronic Plus is already installed in various vehicles and with its help, the distance between the car in-front in maintained. However, the driver is in control all the while and a super sensitive sensor detects the presence/absence of the driver's hand from the wheels and the car drives automatically.

Mercedes Benz has improved on the already advanced Attention Detection System by designing an all new Drowsiness Detection System. This is activated once the car crosses 37 MPH and it continuously monitors the driver. It has five stages of monitoring and in the last stage an alarm is triggered. This is integrated with the Satellite Navigation System to monitor the surrounding area on request.

Speed limit signs are monitored by a mounted camera inside the windscreen and this information is cross checked with the stored data in the Sat Nav system. The car is more advanced now and can take note of no overtaking, no speeding and other such sign boards which makes it safer for the driver and passenger.
