Mercedes-Benz Say Water Injection System Are Too Complex Will Not Be Implement In Series Version

Mercedes-Benz is not preparing a response to the water injection technology announced by BMW. Thomas Weber, a Board member of the brand from Stuttgart, said that the system introduced by BMW is too complex and does not bring substantial benefits, so it is not interesting for future Mercedes-Benz production models.

The water injection system from BMW serves to cool the combustion chamber temperature of the turbo gasoline engines and benefit from both maximum power but also from a lower fuel consumption under sporty driving.
Unfortunately for statistics, the system does not bring any improvement to the standard NEDC combined fuel consumption cycle, which would have led to its rapid implementation in several engines on offer from the Munich brand as BMW representatives who are working on the project stated.

Thomas Weber, Mercedes-Benz official who discussed about the company's involvement in this technology, wants to follow closely the developments of water injection systems in the near future. Currently, the Mercedes-Benz representative believes that the this technology is too difficult to implement on a series car due to several technical constraints, such as how to obtain the necessary water for the system and the benefits of this technology, in terms of effectiveness, are not enough to motivate Mercedes-Benz.

Mercedes-Benz is proud to have the most powerful 2.0 turbo engine, currently available on a production car, which is found equipping the A45 / GLA45 and CLA 45 AMG. The latter is a four cylinder unit with a single turbine with a power level of 381 horsepower, higher than any rival among engines with the same displacement. The motorization reaches the mentioned level of power without requiring a water injection system. BMW presented their system with water injection on the Safety Car from MotoGP, an M4.

Dr Thomas Weber compared water injection to engines with variable compression ratios, the prototypes of which were built by Peugeot, Saab, the Dutch engineering firm Gomecsys and Finnish researchers from Waulis Motors: "It's a little comparable to variable-compression ratios for engines. The investment-to-result ratio to put that into production is the key question and that ratio doesn't work. The biggest problem is where the water comes from. So far what we found is that we can cool it (cylinder temperatures) down with combustion but from the efficiency point of view, it's not the optimal way to do that. We always looked at it at and at each powertrain conference the topic keeps coming up. So far it was only prototypes."

Meanwhile, Klaus Fröhlich, board member for development for BMW said that "The topic of water-injection directly into the cylinder is very important to me. We are going to continue with this in all variants in different drive systems, just as variable valve timing came in all variants."

On top of improving fuel consumption under sports driving those at BMW boast that the system requires no water supply from the user, because the liquid is obtained from condensation achieved in turn by the air conditioning system. The reducing fuel consumption a petrol engine that uses water injection system gets is 20 percent, according to BMW.
