Mercedes-Benz Reveals Its Electric Truck - The Urban e-Truck
|   Thursday, August 25, 2016
The German manufacturer has submitted some photos with an electric truck called Mercedes Benz Urban e-Truck which being prepared for launch early next decade, the earliest being 2021. It will have a range of about 200 kilometers, which would prevent it to travel long distances on highways.

Now that those from Mercedes-Benz Trucks has revealed electric truck called Urban e-Truck, the question needs to be asked: who needs an electric truck?
According to Mercedes-Benz, 73 percent of its truck customers want electric trucks and the primary criterion is the environmental impact of trucks.
In the future, use of conventional trucks will be further limited. They will be affected especially in the cities where trucks are used for distribution of heavy loads.

Niche trucks comprise about 10 percent and its trucks could be electrified. The Germans believe it is the right time to disclose the electric truck and the recent announcement by Tesla Motors that they want to create electric trucks only confirms this.

In the "Master Plan, Part Deux," Tesla CEO Elon Musk exposed a long-term strategy to transfer the company's electric drivetrain onto trucks as well as vans. "In addition to consumer vehicles, there are two other types of electric vehicle needed: heavy-duty trucks and high passenger-density urban transport," he said. "Both are in the early stages of development at Tesla and should be ready for unveiling next year. We believe the Tesla Semi will deliver a substantial reduction in the cost of cargo transport, while increasing safety and making it really fun to operate."

The new Mercedes-Benz Urban e-Truck has three axles, where the middle axle has two electric motors that were taken from the Citaro hybrid bus, fueled by three packs of lithium-ion batteries located along the frame. According to the Germans, the truck will compete in the 26 tons trucks niche and by 2020 when it enters series production it will offer a range of 200 km (120 miles), within the typical range for a day's work for such a truck.

At this time, the weight of the electric propulsion is 2.5 tones, which is 1.7 tons greater than the weight of conventional propulsion, while the maximum load that it can carry is 700 kg lighter compared to a diesel truck.

Before the presentation in Stuttgart, Germany, head of the Daimler Trucks division, Wolfgang Bernhard said "Until now, there were extremely few commercial vehicles with electric powertrains. There's now such a significant improvement on costs, performance and charging times that we're seeing a step-by-step change." So far, few have been making big money from electric vehicles, but that is about to change in the coming years.

The electric truck price is higher than a conventional one, but in the future it could decrease. Similarly, the electric propulsion will decrease in weight and the maximum load that it can carry will be equal to that of a conventional truck.

More details about the Urban e-Truck from Mercedes-Benz will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show. We can expect a futuristic cabin but a modern connectivity system too.
