Mercedes Benz Ready to Showcase the CLA at the Geneva Motor Show
|   Wednesday, March 13, 2013
Mercedes Benz began rebuilding their small class with the new B Class MPV. The A Class hatch backs have been getting huge responses from the market and this is what led Mercedes Benz to go forward with the B Class MPV designs. The CLA is a vehicle which has great market potential and is expected to revive the compact sedan market. Mercedes Benz is making preparations to attract the younger generation apart from its usual customers from the older generation.

The CLA represents the CLS from many directions apart from the fact that the vehicle has been scaled down and hence there are quite a few modifications on the vehicle. The CLA shares its front with the new A Class while the rear end is quite different. The curved roof line, angled, rear window and a sloping boot lid with a larger overhang are some of the features which differentiate the CLA from the CLS.

Mercedes Benz has also installed frameless doors to give the CLA a Coupe like feel. The CLA is 43 mm lower, 7 mm wider and 40 mm longer than the vehicles in the current C Class and this makes the CLA more poised for practical road conditions and speed. Since last year, Mercedes Benz has practically doubled its desires and arrangements to manufacture smaller sedans.

The vehicle is quite practical and aerodynamically active apart from its good looks. The CLA has a drag coefficient of 0.23 which is super considering the fact that it is a bottom segment small sedan which has been designed for practical purposes over speed. Mercedes Benz has planned an even fundamentally styled CLA Shooting Brake next year in the UK and experts are already awaiting the vehicle.

The cabin packs in a decent amount of handiwork and the interior layout is similar to that of the CLS. However, differences lay in the seat arrangement up front, position of the gear and switchgear, dashboard layout etc. The infotainment monitor, placed up high up front is also a new addition to the CLA.

High waistline, wide pillars, shallow rear screen and front seat backs also give the cabin a new feel. However, the Tracking Package is truly missed in the CLA. Although the CLA is larger than any C Class vehicle, it lacks decent rear seating space. However, a generous boot space of 470 liter is available, which is genuinely 11 liters more than any premium segment C Class sedan. The UK will be getting four cylindered turbo charged diesel engine options initially while the base version of the CLA will be powered by a 1.6 liter petrol engine (developed in accordance with Renault), displacing 120 BHP.

A 2.1 liter diesel engine displaces 168 BHP and is used in the CLA 220 CDI while the 2.0 liter engine used in the 250 CDI displaces 208 BHP. Most engines are mated to a six speed manual transmission system with pedal shifts. However, Mercedes Benz could offer an automatic transmission system as optional in the future.
