Mercedes-Benz Plans To Launch 12 New Models By 2020
|   Tuesday, November 11, 2014
Mercedes-Benz is planning the biggest offensive of new models in its history. This is emphasized by the British from Autocar after the brand's head of research and development announced the launch of 12 completely new models in the next six years.

Each of the 12 models referred to Thomas Weber does not have a direct predecessor in the Stuttgart brand range. We are talking about new platforms or derivatives of existing platforms, which will develop new body versions, according to forecasts and market estimates by the company's consumer.
Also, Thomas Weber said in a previous interview that Mercedes-Benz intends to launch 10 new plug-in hybrids. These hybrids will act to reduce overall brand CO2 emissions by the year 2020.

"Moving forward our plans include the most intensive development cycle Mercedes-Benz has ever undertaken", Weber told Autocar. "It is additional to our regular development activities for the replacement of existing models and will significantly strengthen our position within the market".

The news announcing the 12 completely new models in the Mercedes-Benz range came to Beijing in the wake of the inauguration of the new research and development center of the German brand. This event culminated with the presentation of the G Code concept, developed jointly by German designers and the team from China.

Those from Mercedes-Benz could introduce a series of SUVs and crossovers in the range in the near future, industry analysts say, after the manufacturer announced its intention to adopt the GLC, GLE and GLS names for current substitutes GLK, ML and GL. The new philosophy behind Mercedes-Benz's model names would make room within range for many models without requiring subsequent changes in strategy to introduce novelties in the portfolio.

The Mercedes-Benz representatives were stingy in their declarations regarding the list of models that will be launched in the next few years or their character. Previous statements made us expect models like the GLE Coupe, S-Class Maybach, and S-Class Maybach Pullmann, CLA Shooting Brake, C-Klasse Cabriolet, Coupe GLC, and maybe even a series version of the G Code Concept, a smaller SUV than the A-Class.

Mercedes-Benz G Code Concept has a length of 4,100 mm, a width of 1,900 mm and a height of 1,500 millimeters. Compared with the GLA, G Code is 317 millimeters shorter, 96 millimeters wider and 6 millimeters taller. The dimensions were announced positioning the G Code alongside Audi's Crosslane Coupe Concept, to which it is shorter by 110 millimeters, 20 millimeters wider and 10 millimeters higher. In turn, the Audi Crosslane Coupe Concept foreshadowed the potential of a SUV, called Q1 in the Audi range, while Mercedes-Benz G Code presents a design case for a possible B segment crossover.

The G Code concept represents a premium crossover for the A segment, equipped with a hybrid propulsion system and special paint partially capable to recharge the batteries of the hybrid system using captured solar energy. Given the technological level of the concept, the series version is far, far from a proper launch.
