Mercedes Benz officially showcases the CLA
|   Thursday, January 17, 2013
Mercedes Benz has officially showcased the CLA at the Detroit Auto Show. This new four door entry level coupe is expected to reach showrooms across the United Kingdom by May 2013. The CLA features an all new exterior design which features minor visual changes than the concept which was showcased early in 2011. The CLA was showcased officially for the first time and the vehicle sports a price tag of £25,000, just £3,000 more than the entry level A Class vehicles.

The CLA will also be showcased at the Berlin Fashion Week later this year and the vehicle is slated to be the top attraction at the event. The CLA could very well start a new trend among Mercedes Benz lovers and this could very well be the founding stone for a new class of vehicles from the company.

The CLA gives Mercedes Benz access to many segments which were impenetrable even by the A Class vehicles and needless to say, the CLA is a very important car for the company. The vehicle is aimed at the young buyers and will lay the foundation stone for the future development of Mercedes Benz. Among the rival vehicles to the CLA, the most dominant will be the Volkswagen Jetta, the BMW 1 Series and the Audi A3 sedan.

The 1 Series is currently under development and production and is slated for a late 2013 launch. The CLA has been designed under the codename C 117 and is the third vehicle to be based on the front wheel drive platform from Mercedes Benz. The first vehicles were from the A and B Class.

Unlike most conventional sedans, the CLA does not feature a long bonnet, rear wheel drive technology and longitudinally mounted engines. In fact this vehicle uses a transverse engine layout with front wheel drive. Select variants will also feature the 4Matic four wheel drive power train especially in the United Kingdom. The CLA45 AMG will be at the top of the line and this vehicle is expected to feature a 2.0 liter turbo charged engine with four cylinders, displacing a total of 249 BHP.

The inspiration of the CLA can be traced back to the CLS and the heavily sculptured features of the CLA, draws inspiration from the exterior panels of the CLS. The CLA has been described as a design rebel by insiders and this look could influence the design pattern of future vehicles from Mercedes Benz. The CLA measures 4630 x 1777 x 1437 mm in length / breadth / height and is 40 mm longer than the current C Class vehicles.

Mercedes Benz plans on selling the CLA extensively in the Chinese and the North American markets as these are the two major automobile markets right now. The aerodynamics of the CLA has also been enhanced and this vehicle features better exterior and interior sculptures than before. The CLA features Blue Efficiency 180 and is expected to go on sale in major markets across the world by June 2013.
