Mercedes Benz Launch the Citan Along with Renault
|   Saturday, July 06, 2013
The smallest van from Mercedes Benz is here – the Mercedes Benz Citan. The Citan is also famous as it is the first vehicle formed from the Mercedes Benz Renault partnership. The body shape of the Citan is evidently similar to that of the Renault Kangoo and it does not require professional sight to point out the similarities of the designs. The 2012 variant of the Renault Kangoo enjoyed close to 17 percent of the market share and as a result Mercedes Benz decided to join the expert when it comes to joint ventures.

Mercedes Benz is quite excited about the production and sales of the Citan although most of the mechanical components have been designed keeping in mind the technology used by Renault. The body frame, transmission, engine and suspension have been reworked and the Citan drives handles very differently from the Kangoo.

The Citan is based on an all when drive train while Mercedes Benz' Blue Efficiency technology has been added to enhance fuel efficiency on the vehicle. The Citan features five seats and is part van part MPV. This is a new design and both companies will be launching their versions of the Citan on an experimental basis. The Citan is quite refined for a van and handles quite effortlessly.

You need to be behind the wheels of this van to believe what sort of performance measures it is capable of undertaking. Mercedes Benz has added a 110 BHP displacing engine on the Citan although the interior is quite peaceful. The cabin feels like an extended sedan while the Citan handles like a hatchback. These performance levels are sufficient to spoil anyone.

The small turning radius of the Citan also makes this vehicle easy to handle within city limits. Parking is not much of a problem and the Citan performs even under pressure. Electronic measures have been added to this vehicle and this enhances the drive feel. Even though the Citan was not designed for running on tracks the van has the ability corner effortlessly. Electronic Stability System is a primary addition to the Citan and is responsible of the easy handling of the van.

However, despite the additions the Citan did not fare too well in the NCAP tests and this owing to the poor safety measures of the van. The European safety measures have increased and this as a result means stricter norms. This does not mean that the Citan is unsafe even though it is fairly advanced.

The engine on the Citan is unlike any van and it operates perfectly around the 3000 RPM mark. Average fuel efficiency of the Citan is 65.7 MPG and this is high considering its segment. The curved ‘A' pillars are a potent addition to this vehicle and the extra long wheel base is also important in increasing the cabin space. The Citan packs insufficient space to pack in luggage and passengers and this makes it one of the best vans in its segment. The Citan sports a price tag of £14,485.
