Mercedes-Benz Is Working On An Electric S-Class Version
|   Sunday, March 09, 2014
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class will receive an electric version in the near future, according to the English from Top Gear. Dr. Uwe Ernstberger, head of the upper segment models from Mercedes-Benz has confirmed the British debut of this version of S-Class.

For the moment, it has no place in the range, and it is not required by customers, but the German engineers are working on such a version for when it will be required.

Just like any other electric vehicle, the problem is in the battery, says Uwe Ernstberger, requiring the development of technologies that provide high capacity batteries in a package with reduced size and weight.

The S-Class gave up completely of conventional bulbs in favor of LED tech. The decision was made for reasons of energy conservation as LEDs are more efficient, and more durable than conventional bulbs. Thus, 500 LED are used on Mercedes-Benz S-Class to save energy and to reduce fuel consumption. Unlike other models, the S-Class cannot lose the comfort facilities with its transformation into electric car.

Therefore, engineers have a more serious challenge to face.

They will have to not preserve the trunk volume, as well as maintain the comfort of occupants in spite of the installation of batteries.

Meanwhile, the comfort facilities which equip the S-Class impose potential autonomy problems when all the elements are in operation. Therefore, the flagship of the Germans should provide a range comparable to that of a conventional propulsion model, and provide comparable performance.

In addition, the S-Class is the model which the Germans from Mercedes-Benz will make autonomous and the electric version would be the perfect testing bench of new technologies.

Even in this direction, the Germans have a dilemma: how far one can it go in the short term? If the car will be autonomous in the context of current legal procedures, there may be some problems in managing responsibility in case of accident. Rolls-Royce has proposed an electric version of the Phantom, but it was not desired by customers, so it was removed from the immediate plans of the British brand.

Those from Mercedes-Benz work actively on the technical and technological problems, waiting for favorable legislative context for the release of an autonomous S-Class.

"First of all we'll have the plug-in hybrid, where you can drive between 25km to 30km on electric power. We want to use a battery to support electric driving in a closed city like London, and we use the combustion engine for driving outside the city. I think the S-Class is at the very top of the movement of autonomous driving. But the question is how far do we go in the short term, not only technically, but also legally, to let the car drive by itself?"

Ernstberger continues "We always have to make sure the driver is the person who is responsible for the car. We have to make it clear that at higher velocities - over 50/60kmh - the driver is responsible.
