Mercedes-Benz GLC: Information And Official Pictures With The GLK's Replacement
|   Sunday, July 05, 2015
So, after we met the GLE facelift of the old ML, now we come face to face with the GLC, the new generation of the current GLK.
Mercedes practically returns in the medium SUV segment with an interesting proposal, which is positioned above the GLA and under the GLE. The new Mercedes GLC will face traditional models such as the BMW X3, Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60, the latter a real success in the segment in 2014.

According to the new logic of naming models, the C in GLC designates that the GLC is a midsize SUV that belongs to the family of C Class.
Thus, it is logical to see an increase in size and use of the new MRA platform,

The GLC has different proportions compared to the first generation. Standing 4,656 mm long, 1,890 mm wide and 1,639 mm high, the GLC has a footprint almost similar to BMW's X3. It is also 12 cm longer, 5 cm wider and only 0.9 cm higher than the former GLK. Mercedes says that increasing the exterior dimensions resulted in increased knee space for rear passengers by 57 mm.

We note the flowing lines of the bodywork, the wider track gauge and longer hood. The greater wheelbase promises more generous interior space, perfectly adapted to a midsize SUV. The luggage capacity will provide 580 liters, 130 liters more than the older generation, and with the folded bench seat, the volume increases to 1,600 liters.

The new GLC will share the platform with the new Mercedes-Benz C Class. The second generation of the midsize SUV will receive a right-hand drive configuration, which allows the vehicle to assault markets such as Britain, Japan and Australia.

The complex aluminum and steel bodywork is another innovation thanks to which the total weight has been reduced by 80 kg compared to the GLK, although sizes have increased considerably. Thus, the GLC 250 version weighs 1735 kg and fuel economy in all versions is up by 19 percent compared to similar versions of the GLK model.

The entire range of engines will be taken from the current C Class, and will include at start three versions: one petrol (GLC 250 equipped with a 2-liter turbo engine with 211 hp) and two diesels (GLC 220d and GLC 250d both equipped with a 2.1-liter turbo diesel engine with 170 hp and 204 hp respectively).

A plug-in hybrid version is also present. The GLC 350E 4MATIC will be powered by the same system from C 350E, which combines a 2-liter turbo engine and 211 hp with an electric motor, a Li-Ion battery giving a power autonomy of up to 33 km. Mercedes promises acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds and emissions of just 60 g/km CO2.

For the first time, the GLC will receive AMG versions, but this is still unconfirmed. But it seems that the green light for GLC 63 AMG is just a formality. It would take from the C 63 the excellent V8 twin-turbo 4-liter unit offering 510 hp.
The new GLC will be available in showrooms September 2015.
