Mercedes Benz GL Finally Tested on Road
|   Tuesday, July 09, 2013
The bigger version of the Mercedes Benz GL has been unveiled and this vehicle has the power and the charisma to take on the bigger Range Rover and the Porsche Cayenne Turbo. Priced at £91,715, the Mercedes Benz GL will get minor additions to the vehicle such as standard 21 inch rims AMG designed brakes, quad pipes, interior upholstery, seats as well as an Active Curve Control.

Chrome has been used heavily on the GL and this enhances the exterior look of this massive SUV.
The engine displaces 550 BHP along with 560 ft lb of torque which is standard considering the huge bi turbo 5.5 liter V8 block underneath the bonnet. Mercedes Benz is also offering a 6.3 liter engine on the GL which is also used to power the C63 AMG. The Mercedes Benz GL is a wall quite literally and the dimensions complement the exhaust note quite well.

If you opt for the GL do not expect your neighbors to appreciate the vehicle as much as you do though, the primary reason being the deep exhaust note and the high space required by the vehicle. Behind the wheel, the GL gives you a sense of confidence no other vehicle in its class can provide. The ride height is high and this lends a commanding view of the road up front.

When on the highway, you can see the road clearly above the roofs of most of the cars up front. Even most SUVs do not come close to the sheer size and volume of the Mercedes Benz GL. This vehicle weighs a massive 2580 kg while emitting 288 g/km of CO2. It may not be the most fuel efficient on eco friendly SUV on the block, but it sure is the largest.

Gear ratios are well placed even though the initial gears pack in more power. This means that this heavy beast rolls into momentum without much effort in first gear. The GL is the best option for people willing to spend the extra buck for the comfort. The vehicle returns just 23 MPG although this should not pose a problem to people willing to but the GL.

Power to weight ratio is well balanced and the 7G transmission system on the GL works well with the engine. However, the downshifting is a problem and is not quite a smooth as the upshots. The Mercedes Benz GL has a tops speed of 150 MPH and considering its mass and volume and the generated inertia, the brakes are sufficiently powered to avoid accidents and instill confidence into the driver.

The huge dimensions, low fuel efficiency, low eco friendliness and high price tag are against the GL. Therefore, it is surprising every time we see the GL on road. People with a basic sense of practical usage will not opt for this car. The extra luxury and comfort that Mercedes Benz is offering on the GL is not worth the negative sides featured. The GL therefore does not feature strong recommendation from the experts.
