Mercedes-Benz Coupe SUV Concept Officially Presented
|   Friday, April 25, 2014
Mercedes-Benz officially unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show the concept for an SUV Coupe. This concept is likely to be produced in series under the name MLC. First picture of the Mercedes-Benz Coupe SUV concept was published a week ago, the clear intentions of Stuttgart manufacturer being to build a rival to the BMW X6.
At the Beijing Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz has officially unveiled the concept in a series of pictures that clearly show the stylistic direction for future SUVs with the feel of a coupe the brand plans of taking.

The future rival for the BMW X6 uses the ML model's technical platform, and most likely will go into production in the second half of next year under the name Mercedes-Benz MLC. From the new images we can distinguish the SUV Coupe does not take too many design elements from the ML, instead borrowing a few lines from the newly launched S-Class Coupe. In particular, in the rear, the noted narrow lights that are placed over the whole width of the bodywork can be noticed.

"Sensual as a coupe - visionary as an SUV," was the concise description made by Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Mercedes-Benz, to describe the Concept Coupe SUV. "The Concept Coupe SUV stands out thanks to its extreme proportions and in doing so interprets our hallmark Mercedes coupe design idiom perfectly. With its superior sportiness it conveys a sense of modern luxury and aesthetic aspirations of sensual clarity," he continues.

The Coupe Concept SUV is painted in "Alu Beam", as per tradition, but also as a result of recent studies. This paint also points towards the 1930s and 1950s with their technically innovative Silver Arrows.

The Mercedes-Benz Concept Coupe SUV is about 5meters in length, 2,044 mm wide and 1,739 mm high. If these proportions will be preserved for the series version too, the future Mercedes-Benz MLC will be slightly higher compared to its Bavarian rival.

The concept is powered by twin-turbo a V6 gasoline engine, displacing 3.0 liters, that produces 330 hp. Transmission is ensured by the new automatic gearbox 9G-Tronic Plus, whose control lever is located on the steering column. Power is constantly transmitted to all four wheels via the 4MATIC system and the driver can choose the running mode using Dynamic Select Control system. It provides the following modes: Comfort, Slippery, Sport, Sport Plus and Individual.

The future Mercedes-Benz MLC model will be assembled at the United States plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama together with the C-Class, GLK, ML and GL.
"Through this concept Coupe, we are confident that we will reach new customers by opening new segments for Mercedes-Benz. We believe that we only won by a combination coupe-SUV," said Dieter Zetsche, head of Daimler AG.

"The sportily styled coupé study with the added value of an SUV provides a realistic glimpse of a series-production vehicle expected next year, which will boast very dynamic handling," he continued.
The company even goes so far to say that "With this concept car, Mercedes-Benz is announcing the possible expansion of the previously uniform SUV off-roader family."
