Mercedes-Benz Changes Models Names And Versions: CDI Becomes "D" And GLK Goes GLC
|   Saturday, November 15, 2014
Mercedes-Benz presented its new philosophy of baptizing models, designed specifically to eliminate the confusion caused by the new crossovers and niche models of the brand. The new version is simpler than it looks at first sight and the range is divided into basic and derived models.

The basic range consists of models with a single letter in the name, with five such games plus the G-Class. We are talking about the A, B, C, E and S. Each of these has or will have its own derivative: GL for SUV version, CL for coupe version and SL for the roadster version.

The changes will be applied to the range as new generations and facelifts will be launched, with the substitutes receiving the new name directly. In addition to the G-Class, there is an important exception to this rule: the SL retains the name without becoming SLS. This is done to keep the name of this iconic roadster and to avoid confusion with the former AMG supercar division.

Changing the name of the Mercedes-Benz range does not stop there. The engines will receive their own change. On the trunk lid, instead of the current "CDI" or "Natural Gas Drive" or "BlueTec Hybrid" a single letter will be found along with a string of digits which designate motorization. Thus, the once known S 400 Hybrid, for example, will become S 400 h and the A200 CDI will become the A 200 d.

Petrol engines will have no suffix in the official name or the name displayed on the boot lid, as before. There is an exception: the 4MATIC system will retain the format for future generations of Mercedes-Benz models.

The brand from Stuttgart is not the first which goes through a change of naming patterns. Infiniti, in alliance today with Mercedes-Benz, have announced in late 2012 that they will refer to all models in the range as Q and QX.

The rivals from Audi went through a similar change of strategy in the late 80s and early 90s, when they took the names with the letter "A" in front of a class figures to designate the model. BMW has kept the names fairly constant in the last 40 years, but has operated suffixes denoting changes in motorization patterns and the version name transmission or traction.

2015 is the year that will see the first Mercedes-Benz models named according to the German company's new strategy.
"After more than 20 years of continuity involving some of the most recognized and successful product names in the world, we are now making our system of vehicle nomenclature even more understandable. The logic built up on the basis of the core model series will enable our customers to find their way round our growing product portfolio better. Now is the ideal time to do this, for in 2015 we will be updating virtually our whole SUV model range, providing us with the perfect starting point for renaming the whole family of vehicles" stated Dr Jens Thiemer, chief of Mercedes-Benz marketing communications.
