Mercedes Benz and Pebble Technology Team up to Launch Compatible Smart Watch
|   Wednesday, January 08, 2014
Mercedes Benz has designed a smart watch which is capable of communicating with various models from the company and display information such as fuel level, location and door lock status. This device was designed and manufactured by Pebble Technology, which is a part of Mercedes Benz now. The vehicle will be showcased at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week.

Pebble has designed this device to integrate with the Digital DriveStyle application, which converts the in house infotainment system into a secondary smart phone screen.
When the driver is away from his vehicle, this smart watch can be used to pull out a host of diagnostic information related to the present status of the car. Mercedes Benz was planning to offer a smart phone based technology, even though fanatics were not aware of what laid ahead.

This technology now shows us what to expect from Mercedes within the next few years. A range of other high end technology have also been used such as pedestrian safety, automated hazard reports, remote controlled media, Siri control and live traffic map. Insiders were light lipped about this project when last contacted and we do not have clear evidence of what features to expect next week.

Pebble Technology was initially contacted to work on this project, as Mercedes Benz was confident of their project handling capability. However, as the project progressed, this changed into a viable partnership, which could be used for large projects in the near future. Insiders at Mercedes Benz say that Pebble's new smart watch will portray their ability to work on remote control technology, which has been under development at Mercedes Benz' Silicon Valley lab.

Pebble is also one of the very few companies, to work along with engineers at Mercedes, to try and develop new technology for future generations. Rumors have surfaced of Mercedes Benz funding few talented local companies. Fuel saving devices and technology is also under development, which should make their official entry quite soon. Smart watch technology is considerably new in the automotive world, even though few car makers have been working to commercialize this technology.

Mercedes Benz announces its Pebble smart watch right after Nissan launched its Nismo smart watch early last year. Nissan was focused on portraying performance data carried forward from its Nismo models and displaying them, whereas, Mercedes Benz planned a complete approach by providing general data, such as oil level and engine temperature, etc. This watch is also capable of providing terrain information and current traffic conditions and works as your private GPS device.

CES 2014 is up for major action while automobiles and wearable technology seem to be at the heart of things. Mercedes Benz' technology seems to do justice on both grounds. Final pricing is yet to be confirmed although we could be looking at base prices hovering lose to $100 for the device alone. We are not sure if this is commercially viable, although the engineering departments are working closely to come up with a practical solution.
