Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG Has Been Confirmed
|   Monday, June 18, 2012
After 2 years of intense speculation, we finally have confirmation from Mercedes-Benz that an AMG 3rd generation A Class hatch will be launched. While the rumors said its name will be A25 AMG, the big boys at Benz say the car's name will be A45 AMG. Those living in Europe can expect to see the new hatch in showrooms in the early months of 2013. Presumably, the Audi RS3 and BMW M135i will have to make serious efforts to keep their positions in the face of this new rival.

What's more, the A45 AMG will not be only car developed by the in-house tuner. AMG is working on a CLA 4 door coupe (this one, and the next, will make it to US shores) and a planned CLA Shooting Brake. For those wondering, the odds of the A45 arriving in American showrooms are not that great, so don't get your hopes up.

Ola Kallenius, AMG boss, told AutoWeek that the planned CLA-inspired models will likely bear the names CLA45 AMG and CLA45 AMG Shooting Brake. He also said the cars will be available in the US somewhere in 2014.

All of the above will use the same engine, a 2 liter transversely mounted 4 cylinder unit. This will be the first time when AMG mounts an engine like that. This engine is based on the one mounted on the A250 model, however, it gains a unique cylinder head and induction system to help it develop 330+ horsepower and more than 295 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to all 4 wheels via a 7 speed dual-clutch transmission and a multi-plate clutch all-wheel drive system with rear biased torque distribution.

This engine will the most powerful 4cylinder unit ever mounted on a Mercedes-Benz vehicle. Supposedly, it will overtake any rivals easily when it comes to output per liter. Example: the turbo 2.5 liter engine mounted on the RS3 produces 335 horses and 332 lb-ft of torque and the M135i's turbo 3.0 liter engine pumps 316 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque.
Performances will no doubt satisfy everyone. We should expect 0-60 in close to 5 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph (something that is becoming customary). At the same time, a host of upgrades will probably be available that will enable drivers to go over that limit.

MacPherson strut suspension in the front, a multilink setup in the rear, together with custom bushings, a wider track compared to the standard model, stiffer springs and dampers, thick antiroll bars and uprated brakes, will ensure the cars' handling will be top notch. The brand new A Class' electromechanical steering system will be mounted too, but some tweaks will most definitively be found for the sake of improved accuracy and feel.

On the outside, elements that will be unique to the car include a sporty set of bumpers, large-diameter wheels and a rear diffuser with a pair of integrated exhaust tips. In just a few more months we will see what the car is all about both on the outside and inside, so wait patiently.
