Mercedes-AMG Will Launch Hybrid Model In 2020
|   Saturday, August 15, 2015
Environmental regulations are tightened every year and manufacturers have to work intensively to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by using different engineering tricks, but also going for hybrid propulsion. By 2020, the CO2 range level average will not have to exceed 101 g / km, which is impossible at the moment for Mercedes-AMG performance models. In order to fall into these narrow limits, those from Mercedes-AMG will have to launch hybrid models by 2020 to reduce the environmental impact.

According to Thomas Weber, head of Mercedes-Benz research and development department, the performance division of the Stuttgart brand will make this step in order to reduce CO2 emissions at range level. This emissions reduction is needed to comply with EU rules which will become significantly more stringent by 2021. Each model on offer by each automobile manufacturer will be more efficient by 2020 and the AMG division is no exception to this rule.
Thomas Weber explained to the British from Autocar that optimizing a hybrid model for achieving performance worthy of AMG division is the best solution for this department.

Daimler, the company which owns Mercedes-Benz, must achieve emission levels of 101 grams CO2 / km by 2020 at range level. In 2020 95 percent of models sold by the company must comply with this target, while in the year 2021, all cars sold must help achieve average emissions at range level. The pressure put on the AMG division is high, Weber explains, since the sales of the range are growing and emissions were reduced only by introducing small displacement turbocharged engines, compared with the old 6-liter V8 engine.

The AMG division of Mercedes-Benz has not released until now a performance hybrid model because there is no conviction that it would be popular among customers.
Thomas Weber was quoted by the British from Autocar in this issue, saying that the customers of AMG call the most powerful option available in the segment, when purchasing a model developed by this division. The future hybrid model from AMG was not revealed, but it will use a solution derived from Mercedes-Benz series hybrids already out.

The hybrid system will be optimized for minimized weight and will ensure both lower fuel consumption and increased performance for brief periods of time using its electric motors.

After some adjustments of the compact battery pack and electric motor, the hybrid system of AMG models will not only aim to lower consumption and have moderate emissions, but also to get more spectacular performance!

"A simple e-boost solution [similar to Mercedes' current Bluetec Hybrid set-up, with a relatively small battery and motor] could help us to add power and regenerate energy by braking. It also has the advantage of already being in large-volume production. The system has to be light and cheap." said Thomas Weber.

Finally, the adaptation of the hybrid system will not harm the brand's image. Mercedes-AMG fans have accepted all wheel drive, and will also accept the hybrid drive. Just remember that the strongest hyper-cars of the moment, LaFerrari, McLaren P1, and Porsche 918 Spyder are hybrids too.
