Mercedes Aims To Overtake Rolls-Royce With 1 Million Dollar Car
|   Wednesday, July 02, 2014
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class will get a Pullmann version in 2015 which will cost around 730,000 euro (about 1 million dollars), headlines Automotive News. According to preliminary information, the model will have a length of 6,400 mm, which makes it 406 mm longer than a Rolls-Royce Phantom and also the longest series passenger car was ever built.

The future Pullmann will remember the old versions of Mercedes-Benz who wore this name, and will receive up to four individual seats in the back, and even offer bulletproof protection right from time of order, without the need to turn to a specialized company for customization.

The Pullman version of the S-Class will be twice as expensive as a Rolls-Royce Phantom with extended wheelbase, and comes as a gauntlet thrown in the face of competitors from Audi and BMW to develop more expensive and exclusive versions than the Bentley and Rolls-Royce ranges.

Rear seats will be located face to face and the driver will be separated from the rear passengers through a window. The implementation of this feature also reminds us of the old Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman, a model which was used by dictators and celebrities such as John Lennon and benefited from the company's advanced technologies available at the time.

Tim Urquhart, a London-based analyst for IHS said that "they are trying to evoke the very famous old 600 Pullman that was used by people from dictators to John Lennon. They want to show that Mercedes still stands for an absolute elite, luxury and opulence. There's symbolic value to this kind of car."

In addition to launching the new avant-garde technologies, the Stuttgart manufacturer gets for every S-Class sold an image capital, besides the profit margin related to each unit, and this despite the massive investment required to finance the technologies it equips.

"The S-Class is a decisive signature vehicle for the brand and very profitable at the same time. Its importance goes far beyond its sales figures." declared Juergen Pieper, Frankfurt-based analyst for Bankhaus Metzler, who estimates that the vehicle has an operating profit margin between 12 and 15 percent.
The Pullman version of S-Class is one of the six bodyworks that will form the current lineup of this model, once all flagship variants from Mercedes-Benz are released.

At the auto show in Los Angeles and Guangzhou, Mercedes-Benz will launch a Maybach version of the S-Class with increased wheelbase, declared for Automotive News a source within the company, who preferred to remain hidden. According to that source, Mercedes-Benz will launch a convertible version of the S-Class, which will replace the iconic Maybach Laundalet.

By adding more options to the upper end of its range, Mercedes is trying to balance its increasing dependence on compact cars. Sales of models like the A-Class will amount to 30 percent of vehicle sales worldwide for the brand this year, compared to about 15 percent in 2011, according to IHS. Demand for high production volume comes with risks to its image.

"The myth of the star might get lost on the way. They have to be careful that they don't diversify too much. They're losing part of the exclusivity." stated Patrick Welter, publisher of German S-club magazine.
