McLaren P15, The New Mid-Range British Supercar Has Been Confirmed For Series Production
|   Monday, February 03, 2014
McLaren will launch a new supercar positioned between the entry-level coupe MP4-12C and the top-model P1. The project known under the code name P15 was confirmed by Mike Flewitt, the current CEO of British company.

Although the new model is still on the drawing board of McLaren's creative designers and engineers, its configuration is already known. The McLaren P15 will appeal to the solutions already patented by its big brother, P1: the central supercharged engine, most likely derived from the current twin-turbo V8 displacing 3.
liters developed by Ricardo, chassis and carbon fiber bodywork. McLaren refused to confirm other details, technologies, with final specifications being far away from a green light for the series production.

The McLaren P15 is not to be confused with the P13, a proposed model completely separate having a more affordable price, and announced to be a future direct rival for the Porsche 911. The weight does not exceed 1400 kg and the propulsion will be provided by the same V8 twin-turbo used by the entire McLaren range. Of course it will be a different version with power levels close to 400-500 hp. The acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h is estimated to be less than 4 seconds.

The prices of the two future McLaren sports models will clarify their exact positioning. If the P13 will cost about 120,000 pounds, in the case of the P15 the reckoning will start from 400,000 pounds, a figure that places the new British coupe into the rarefied mid-range supercar league.

The annual roll planned for the McLaren P15 amounts to approximately 1,000 units, while the P13 will be produced, according to first estimates, in at least 2,000-2,500 copies. In total, McLaren can produce 6,000 cars per year at the current rate of three shifts per day. That could grow to 7000 units per year if needed, once the arrival of the P15 is a reality.

The McLaren chief has not advanced any exact term for the official debut of the new P15, but the new supercar will certainly arrive on the market by the end of this decade. A possible successor to the P1 will not see the light of day until after electric propulsion technologies, whether referring to batteries or engine, will advance sufficiently, announced McLaren Automotive chief executive Mike Flewitt.
More versions of the P13 are also being planned, including a Spider version.

Just as previously stated by the McLaren chairman Ron Dennis, the company will launch every year "something of substance". So far, this statement has been fully respected. Thus, this year, the range will be enriched with an enhanced version of the 12C which will be sold as a stand-alone model. This new model has been developed with the goal of delivering on-road performance rivaling those of the Ferrari 458 Speciale. The new model will use an altered version of the 12C's engine and is expected to produce close to 650 horses.
